Don't think this is a referendum on the Nats medical staff, as many questions as there may be about it.  Some team was going to take Purke today.

I think if Rendon and Purke don't recover it definitely is

People are so freaking stupid. They would have complained had the Nats took a safe signable college pick there.

They took a guy with the biggest upside left in the Draft and people still complain.

2 potential top of the rotation starters - that's outstanding no matter how you slice it.  I hope we do sign him.  Even if we only get a few years of service out him, that's fine.  It's a 3rd round pick and $4 million.  That's less than what they're paying for Maya.

A Rendon Meyer Goodwin Purke draft is a gigantic spec play. If it all works out, we are an unstoppable juggernaut. If it all blows up, we get nothing out of this draft class except a new H-Rod and a 4th OF.

The draft is a huge spec play.  If Rizzo had gone off the board at 6, we'd be roasting him right now.  History will be the ultimate judge, but we don't have that luxury right now.

Is anybody really that concerned about Rendon long-term?  I think we might be jaded after seeing what went down with LaRoche this year.

If he doesn't sign, does the pick roll to next year or no?
Yes.

I agree that it's hard to be upset with any aspect of this pick.  Perhaps we should have picked Trevor Shmolder?

Bell won't sign with the Pirates in a million years
But it is a nice way for them to keep a high 2d next year.  They'd troll out a $5.5 MM signing bonus and see if he walks away.

Rendon might be forced to move defensively but eventually he should be fine. I think his floor is Nick Johnson (ie, Hits When Healthy), which is pretty darn good. I was just writing "If it all blows up..."

from Keith Law on Osich

Osich looked like a first-rounder in the fall of his junior year, potentially a top-10 pick, but blew out his elbow that February and missed all of 2010 as a result. Now he enters a tougher draft class in his recovery year but is making a big, late push to re-enter the first round, starting with his no-hitter of UCLA in late April.

Osich has touched 98 in shorter outings and is sitting more 90-93 now, with his velocity gradually improving as the spring goes on, although his slider still isn't back and he's mostly fastball-changeup, with the latter projecting as solid-average. He stays over the rubber and is very upright through his delivery, with minimal shoulder tilt, a good stride and early pronation. However, there will always be a concern about his arm since he's had Tommy John surgery.

A high pick here is a bet that Osich will eventually sit 92-94 or better again with that above-average-to-plus slider, a smart gamble for a team in the sandwich round that lacks a high pick.

that's fine, but I think Rendon's worst case is playing 1b, so he's not a real risk, but with Purke, some very large budget teams (with medical staffs that don't seem as bumbling as the nats) passed even though he was a possible number 1 overall before the injury

Purke isn't a real risk either unless you're going to be personally funding his salary.

If we sign him and he flames out, we still already snagged Rendon, Meyer and Goodwin.

If he returns to form we have another top of the rotation guy in our system.

There's zero downside.

I guess I don't see any scenario where he plays 3B for us, so I'm not worried about it.

Because at that point there were still safer still-talented players left that were much more likely to sign.  The Nats took one themselves in the second round.  But four our fourth pick, there's no reason not to take a risk like this.  I think most clubs are not willing to spend the kind of cash Purke will demand at this slot on what is potentially a project, especially since if he doesn't sign the compensation pick (early third-round) is nothing special.  As such, most of the clubs with large budgets don't really need to take this kind of risk.  The Nats do.

I could see him taking over mid 2013

If it does, we have a potential 2 ace (Purke/Strass) 2 number 2 (Meyer/Zimmermann) rotation with a hell of a trade chip in Rendon or a really good first baseman

Osich would be fantastic. I'm actually not worried about his health - there are plenty of guys who have TJ surgery in college, come back stronger than before, and make great pros. Brian Wilson had Tommy John at LSU.

Osich Osich Osich c'mon!

No.

But I like both selections. They had to take Rendon at #6 and Purke in the 3rd is a worthwhile gamble. If they get him signed and he can recover/rehab, it's a great upside pick.

If he doesn't they get a pick back in 2012.
What has to happen is Purke has to go to the Cape League and pitch a few times, like Reynaudo did last year.  When he shows he is sound, he gets top 10 money. If he doesn't, then he goes back to school and we get the pick back next year. Fair enough?
