Dillon Maples $3m

Rendon + Meyer + Purke + Maples could = $15 million. Would they do it?

Yup.  I really don't know what we're hoping to achieve here.  If we're not going to take high velocity arms we should be taking position players.  Position players at least have a chance to break out and be incredible players where it was previously unexpected, but a pitcher who pitches in the high 80's (and this is with the charitable scouting reports on fastball velocity) and has never demonstrated the ability to do better is not a huge need for the Nats.  Even the "control" pitchers like Maddux, Lee and Schilling all had much better fastballs than that when drafted.

Hey gang, still live blogging day 2 over at my website, NatsGM.com.  I think they are having a solid day so far, though there are definitely some choices I would like to have back.  Love the Purke and Dupra picks

It may take $15 just to sign Rendon, Meyer, and Purke. With Maples and Goodwin, you're talkin $20mill.

Each of the last 2 years, our draft expenditures have been $11.5 million. How far up would they go to match the talent this year?

Ouch, another college senior.

If they sign all over their top picks including Purke I will be fine with this but I feel like we are missing out on even more talent here in the middle rounds by going with safe, cheap picks instead.

Purke's the one thatll break the bank.

Rendon's gonna get at least 8. Meyer probably gets around 3. Goodwin 1.5. He's got Boras and leverage on his side.

There's 12.5 there. Purke could go anywhere from $2mill to $6mill, if he regains his stuff in the Cape.

Its gonna cost but at least picks 4-10 will only get a mill combined! Lol

Round 12, 367 - Blake Monar - LHP

JR

Your Nats' prototypical finesse lefty pick. Tops out around 87-88

Monar = Grace = Rosenbaum = Milone = Lannan

This is hilarious.

I guess it maybe makes sense if they really intend to sign Purke. This isn't an approach I'd like to see every year.

If they miss on any of the top 4, this draft could turn out pretty nasty.

It's like after they drafted Purke they were like "We are done spending, let's just take cheap signable college pitchers the rest of the way. Gotta save that $$$$"

If they sign Purke, this will be the biggest-budget draft in MLB history by at least 50%. Maybe double the previous record. Think about that.

Like the Monar pick, I saw him two years ago before he injured himself and he had some talent... BA is acting like his arm is slowly returning to that form.  Nice pick in the 12th

If they sign everybody including Purke I'm mostly fine with it.

Still, not even one HSer in the first 11 rounds? For a team that is starved for young talent with upside?

We've spent more on the draft than any team the past two years and have gone with over slot guys our first 4 picks. Picking two guys who will cost top 10 money to sign I think the FO deserves a break for looking at signability the rest of the way.

All power. Weak plate approach and not a great defender.

If it makes you feel any better, neither did the Braves (last time I checked, anyway).  I'm guessing there aren't a whole lot of really valuable high schoolers we're missing.
If they miss on any of the top 4, this draft could turn out pretty nasty.
Miss as in fail to sign?  I'd still disagree even then, but I think the Nats are confident they can sign all four.  If by "miss" you mean the prospect doesn't pan out, I fully expect 3 of the 4 top picks to be disappointments.  That would still leave one really, really great major leaguer.

Top hitter: 1B Casey Kalenkosky (.318 BA, 53 runs, 19 HR, 62 RBI, .650 slugging)

Quote
Kalenkosky hit 20 homers in two seasons at Cisco (Texas) JC and nearly matched that total during the regular season, tying the Texas State record with 18. The 6-foot, 195-pound righthanded hitter's power will have to carry him, however. He lacks the pitch recognition to hit for a high average and is a below-average runner and defender. He does have arm strength and has seen brief action as a catcher.

Miss as in, don't sign.
