I really never understood this. Pitchers are athletes by nature and most were all-star caliber position players in high school. Running the bases really shouldn't be an issue for the majority of major league pitchers.

I don't want them doing anything to distract from their primary job, pitching. Any amount of base running causes some level of fatigue, even if it's just one or two pitches worth.

There's more than enough time available when they are between starts and between bullpen sessions when they have what would otherwise be down time. It's not going to burden their feeble minds too much.
