His defense has been OK, not great, but acceptable all things considered.
In terms of errors, yeah, but his UZR/150 is legendarily bad in LF.  We'd be making the same mistake we did keeping Dunn there for so long.

He's been perfectly acceptable at first.  Great stretch play for one out.  No, he's not close to LaRoche, but he's better than Dunn and we need him now, and we need him there.

He's our first baseman now.

I realize that, but you and I both know that when LaRoche comes back up Morse is going back into the outfield.

Riggs used an adverb!   I don't believe it.

LaRoche is likely done for the season.

Yeah, but there's really no telling when LaRoche will be back, so there's no real reason to worry about that at the moment.

I don't think he was saying that we are a winning team as much as saying that this is the kind of win that winning teams make. Normally we'd be the Padres in this game.

Winning teams rarely have to win on walkoff homers because they are usually ahead by multiple runs by the time the ninth inning rolls around.

Perhaps. BUT it is in their DNA that they can pull off games like this when the blowout doesn't happen.

winning teams beat the teams they are supposed to beat - we're supposed to beat the Padres.  Look, I know we barely beat something between a AAA and an independent league team tonight, but hey, it was a fun night at the park.

ESPN on Lannan:

Quote
How Nationals starter John Lannan put the Nationals in position to win against the Padres: - Found his curveball. Entering Friday, Lannan had thrown just 45 curveballs all season. He threw 21 hooks Friday and the Padres were 0-4 with two strikeouts in at-bats ending with the pitch. Hitters are now 0-9 on the season against Lannan's curve. - Effective slider use. Lannan threw only nine sliders but four ended at-bats (0-4), including a strikeout. For the season, foes are hitting .171 in at-bats ending on Lannan's slider. - Control and efficiency. Of the 27 batters he faced, only one saw a 2-0 count. Of the Padres' 27 plate appearances, 15 were three pitches or fewer. In addition, Lannan retired all eight hitters who led off innings.

I also noticed that before the rain delay he had a very fast pace. He received the ball from the catcher and quickly threw another pitch. It seemed like it worked too. After the rain delay, he still had the same success but I noticed he slowed down a bit. Maybe it was just me though. He did throw his curve a lot today, which is something he has been needing to do.

Comparative dates on which the Nats notched their 22nd win, each season:

2008 - 25th May (51st match)
2011 - 27th May (50th match)
2006 - 31st May (54th match)
2007 - 31st May (54th match)
2009 - 25th June (71st match)

Factoring in the rain delay, I'll say this is maybe Lannan's best game.
