Now take Jayson Werth and trade him to the Red Sox for Adrian Gonzalez

Gonzalez is still a Padre.

I want to laugh at ESPN. They didn't do anything wrong but they had an article about the Winter Meetings. It listed when they expect the big 4 (Lee, Crawford, Werth, and Beltre) to start to sign/the last day they will sign/and when they will sign!

Werth was January 24th if I recall. It's December 5th!

I guarantee you that Keith Law will be ripping on this deal.

I agree though, this has to be an anchor for some other subsequent moves to make it really be a big positive. This does open the doors for a lot of possibilities.

QFT

I'm hoping this is what happens.

Still really hoping for a tarde for Greinke or Shields.

We'll have one lefty and one switchy in our lineup anyway unless we get a lefty 1B, what would you expect?

I would expect the lefty 1B.  Just something to split up the right handers in the middle.

Well I'm sure NOBODY expected Werth to sign with the Nats.

I would spend 300 million to get: Lee, Crawford and LaRoche/Pena. Then I'd trade Willingham and pieces for Greinke. Then we sit back and watch our 2011 playoff run. Then in 2013 we will see this team become a dynasty.
What happens if the pieces are... Desmond, J Zimm, Balester/Stammen/Meyers combo. No inside stuff here just thinking out loud.

No yeah. I forgot to add in that post that its just a shock a deal like this was made BEFORE the winter meetings. I wonder how long Rizzo was discussing with Werth.

Supposedly his ideal was 6 years, I guess 7 from Rizzo just sealed it.

greinke said he would consider waiving his no trade clause for the Yankees.  I assume if he would only consider for them, he probably wouldnt waive it for us.

Yeah, although I think the Winter Meetings are kind of overrated in terms of being where "everything gets done."  It really hasn't felt that way, recently.

PA, I want you to know I have nothing but good things to say that the Lerners opened up the bank... my problem is completely with Rizzo and his understanding of how players age. This is a terrible deal that will be a noose in just a few years.

It doesn't even really improve the lineup, it fills the whole Dunn left.

Now they have to find someone else for OF/1B just to have a net gain.
Funny, Linty.  You didn't seem to put much credence into people who said Dunn's body type and skill set doesn't age well, but you are all over Rizzo for maybe going a year or two too long on a nice athlete who could even play CF for you next year.

The Nats got this guy by going a year longer than everyone else thought he'd get. The ChiSox got Dunn by going a year longer than the Nats offered, a year longer than "consensus" estimates, and $16MM more than the O's offered.

This deal shows Rizzo does take defense seriously.  I can easily see Werth playing right until Harper is ready, shifting to left at that point, and perhaps first the last two years of his contract if his defense deteriorates.

While it was sort of a given he was not going back to Philly, I love the dagger this throws at them.  I'm pleased for the Nats right now.

But can anyone explain WTF is the A-Gon deal?  I turn off the computer to watch a college hockey game, and the whole world is upside down.

Probably made the deal happen when Dunn signed.

Btw, there was a programming interruption on the MLB Network to show a Rizzo press conference and break the Werth signing.

I'm in heaven.

Honestly, I'd have no problem with that other than JZimm, as much as I'd hate to see Balester (and presumably you) go somewhere else.

Good point. Definitely not this year. I just like the winter meetings because it adds SO MANY rumors and it's awesome. I love just being able to come home from class and just seeing like 4-5 new articles on talks and stuff.

Again, his spending is easily sustainable with multi-billionaire owners. I think this spending shows we're ready to make another move for a pitcher.

Lerners, I'm sorry. I lost faith there for a bit. This signing is not baseball smart at the tail end, but it is a symbolic moves. Shows we're ready to start trying to win some games.

i was in a bad mood because this kid who made my life hell a few years ago is now dating the girl that i've liked for some time (and was closing in on), but this makes today slightly better. not all the way, but slightly better.

but you have 5 right handers in a row.

But, how well do they hit right handers?  If they him them well, it doesn't matter.

Me too. Let's give them Stammen then!
