I wouldn't mind getting Pena at like 3/18 right now.

Exactly, which is why I said possibly better. He's an OF, defense only matters so much. He's good for five to ten less HRs or so than Dunn on average. He's clearly better than Dunn, but it isn't by a mile.

The fact is it shouldn't have to be an either/or proposition.  Adding to the team with Werth while keeping Dunn would've been huge progress, giving the team a truly fearsome heart of the lineup that could've filled the stadium with curly W wearers.  Swapping one for the other is treading water on a 5th place team, and was almost certainly necessitated by the cost of having two major contracts on the roster instead of one.

As has already been pointed out, we're back to the ownership shell game as certain contracts have to come off the books for others to be added.  That it's on a larger scale this time around doesn't change the underlying fact, as potential season ticket holders know full well.  The move's oddly reminiscent of when the Lerners got shamed into signing Dunn the first time around, having let the perception and reality sink to all-time lows before making the overpaying move that smacks of desperation.

1) Points for Potomac - there wasn't a darn word out there about this.

2) Points for Rizzo doubters, for now, like Linty

3) Points to Rizzo for his close relationship with Boras

PA, I want you to know I have nothing but good things to say that the Lerners opened up the bank... my problem is completely with Rizzo and his understanding of how players age. This is a terrible deal that will be a noose in just a few years.

It doesn't even really improve the lineup, it fills the whole Dunn left.

Now they have to find someone else for OF/1B just to have a net gain.

LaRoche would be better, but I'd probably be cool with that.

New Nats lineup:

1. Bernadina CF
2. Werth RF
3. Zimmerman 3B
4. Willingham LF
5. Morse 1B
6. Desmond SS
7. Espinosa 2B
8. Ramos C

That's pretty solid... or you could move Desmond/Espinosa to #2, Werth to #4, Willingham to #5, Morse to #6.

Werth struckout 156 and 147 times the last two years.  He really isn't a number 2 hitter.

LERNERS ARE NOT CHEAP

I officially resign from LAC.

I can agree with Linty here. I still think this was a good move. It was necessary because we lost the bat of Dunn... With that said, if this the only big signing/acquisition this offseason, then this does not prove the LANC. The deal is outrageous for a 31 year old... 7 years? I guess it is the only way to gain someone of his caliber. Hopefully this helps out in the long run by showing free agents we are willing to pay them money rather than this being a move to make up for getting rid of Dunn. I wish we had both.

Love Jason Werth, he's a total bad ass, and really, I don't care at all if the team has to eat salary in 4 years.

We're still going to get a first baseman. Definitely. There's no way Rizzo would let us go into the season without a lefty in the middle of the order.

I think everyone's going to be happy about this offseason by the time it's over.

I'll be very happy if they platoon Morse with either LaRoche or Pena (whichever they acquire).

Anyway, sig/avatar updated to reflect current feelings on the team.

Anybody know if Worth is best friends with Cliff Lee? There has to be another angle to this deal.

I have some crow to eat for whatever I was saying when Dunn went to the White Sox.

I like it.  It's a lot of money, but for the Nats to sign any free agents right now they were going to have to go WAY above market value to acquire someone decent to improve the team.

This.

We just acquired a really good outfielder and complete player, and we overpaid to make sure he came here. The fact that we were willing to overpay is impressive, the fact that Rizzo sold Werth on coming here is impressive, and the fact that Rizzo seems to be sticking to his organization philosophy is good. Rizzo didn't just sign Dunn because he was here, he went an grabbed a player that fit his vision of the team.

I'm pretty sure Rizzo knows it's a bad deal in a pure baseball sense, especially on the tail end.

Lerners might possibly be cheap and/or incompetent?

It seems that Boras has become accustomed to maximizing his income by dealing with Rizzo. I agree though, this has to be an anchor for some other subsequent moves to make it really be a big positive. This does open the doors for a lot of possibilities.

A huge contract like this is sustainable with multi-billionaire owners. Maybe this is a sign we're turning the corner. Great move regardless!

Give Cliff Lee his big $$$! Trade for Grienke and get Carlos Pena at 1B.... the Nats will be in the Playoffs in 2012 and go .500 in 2011.

I would spend 300 million to get: Lee, Crawford and LaRoche/Pena. Then I'd trade Willingham and pieces for Greinke. Then we sit back and watch our 2011 playoff run. Then in 2013 we will see this team become a dynasty.

but you have 5 right handers in a row.

We'll have one lefty and one switchy in our lineup anyway unless we get a lefty 1B, what would you expect?
