Yeah, Murton, that's the guy.

I wrote a piece on him a while back.

http://flotn.blogspot.com/2010/10/matt-murton-where-art-thou.html

While Branyan's defense is better than Dunn's (hell, what 1B's isn't?), it is nothing worth noting because of the bad back you mentioned.  He would be serviceable, but he is huge an injury risk.  Worth taking a look at, though.

Dunn is far from the defensive player his rep gave him... as for Branyan... he's a good fall back... but he's older than Dunn and he has back problems... so he's not likely to stick on the field... and I feel like Rizzo doesn't want any players that can hit 50 HR's in a lineup.

He wants speed, and .240 hitters with .298 OBP.

Seriously though, if push came to shove, Branyan would not be a terrible last ditch effort.

I think you're probably going with the hyperbole here, but I don't believe this to be the case at all.  I think Rizzo wants guys who both play defense and offense.  If Dunn was even just a good defensive player, I think he would have had little problem bringing him back, but he's basically a 1 tool player, at least in Rizzo's eyes.

That's why I said "seriously, though".

Of course I don't think Rizzo wants guys that hit .240... that's clearly too high. .220 is more like it. :D

Branyan is a year to year guy at this point in his career.  I think the Nats can live with that.  They may expect a blossoming of Marrero next year, or some other FA they can get in on.

Along these lines, there's always Casey Krotchman.

Rizzo is going to buy a 6 foot wood post and glue a first basemen's mit to it.  .017 OPS.

Signing a right-handed hitting first baseman for one year makes absolutely no sense.  We need a left-handed bat in the middle of the lineup -- and desperately.

If Lee is the last option, we're better off keeping Willingham for the last year of his contract and playing him at 1B.  No need to throw money at another guy.  I still think we'll ultimately end up with LaRoche, and you'll see Willingham dealt in short order.

Not if the right handed batters hit RHP well.  I think we'd all prefer a left handed batter but it's a preference not a necessity.

This may be as close as Feel Wood gets to playing.

This could very well be post of the year.

Lyle Overbay signs with Pirates.  He would have been a solid platoon partner for Morse at 1B.

Any word on how much Overbay's one year deal was for?  We might have missed out on an opportunity there.  We'll see how much money LaRoche gets.

Bruney gets a bad rap.

He still gave the best interview of the year, after blowing the game against the Cubs, outside of Dunn's "He's lucky to play with me."

Slider.

What was Dunn's "He's lucky to play with me" comment about? I can't recall that one.

Dunn hits a walk-off, late in the year, and Debbi goes up to him, and ask "how lucky are you to be able to play with Pudge?"

Dunn looks at her, and deadpans, "He's lucky to play with me."

At least, that's how I remember it happening.

Moments like that make me wonder if Debbi comes up with those questions on her own, or does someone feed them to her?

Like some sort of fungi? I can't believe a warm blooded animal could come up with the crap she asks.

Debbi is great for her comedic value.  It would be nice if she were hotter.  But then it wouldn't be as funny.

I'm getting a little anxious about this.  There must be zero interest in LaRoche from other teams for us to be waiting this long.

Or there's still only a team or two looking to sign a 1B and you've got viable 1 year options like Lee and Cantu that teams can try to leverage against LaRoche.
