You would think he had asked for Livan and Gonzalez.

Didn't it already get pointed out that last year was a dip from the norm and that his road splits are significantly higher than his home splits?  Nah, that would mean looking at the whole picture and we know you won't do that.
That's not so bad, although a still a little whiney.

Ah crap, I didn't realize how big the gif was. I just have it bookmarked. The still frame gets the job done.

I would be okay with Toronto outbidding us for Pena and going for LaRoche instead.  Although I don't understand what they want him for considering their entire lineup is composed of low-average, high-OBP (sometimes) sluggers.

I would too. LaRoche could actually do more than just hitting occasional homers.

pick your poison (career average over 162 games):

adam laroche (31): .271 / .339 / .488 / 26 HR / 93 RBI / 40 2B / 58 BB / 141 K

or

carlos pena (32): .241 / .351 / .490 / 35 HR / 98 RBI / 26 2B / 88 BB / 171 K

Adam LaRoche career wRC+: 115

Carlos Pena career wRC+: 124

Pena has had a better career.  But he is also a year older and regressed heavily last year.  What's interesting is that by wRC+ (taking into account their ballparks etc.) the two of them had almost identical years last year (LaRoche regressed a lot too).  So I may have been a little quick to judge on Pena vs. LaRoche; I was probably swayed by their batting averages.  The reality is that they'd both be about the same for us.

Hasn't LaRoche sported the better glove, recently?

Even if the glove ends up a wash, if you base your decision on recent trends I would think LaRoche is the far superior choice.

As far as 1Bmen go, Mike Napoli makes a great DH.

Kevin Towers (GM of Arizona) just said* that he was happy to get rid of nearly 400 strikeouts from his lineup - he was referring to the Reynolds trade and NOT re-signing Adam LaRoche.

*on XM-175 with Jim Bowden and Casey Stern.

It's not so clear if you adjust for park effects, I'll say that much.  I would still take LaRoche, but a year's difference in age isn't that big and Pena has been the better performer for his career.
