I'm sure after Werth's signing every free agent "has interest" in playing for the Nats.  A number of them are probably calling up their agents right now and asking them to inquire about whether Rizzo wants their services.  I wouldn't read too much into it.

If it's Prince Fielder I'm going to go for a full season plan instead of a half...

Fielder is a Boras client. Zimmerman better switch agents if he wants to stay on the Nats.

From Warbler McSmebblesevers:

Quote
Free agent first baseman Adam LaRoche said Monday that he has interest in playing for the Nationals and his representative is expected to meet with the club in the next couple of days.

LaRoche is a player that Nationals have had their eyes on for several months. He is a solid defensive first baseman and is coming off the best season of his career, hitting .261 with 25 home runs and 100 RBIs for the D-backs.

"In the next few days we are going to start some conversations with the Nationals,"  LaRoche said via phone. "If we come on the same page, I would definitely have interest in playing for them."

LaRoche believes the Nationals are headed in the right direction after they agreed to terms with outfielder Jayson Werth on a seven-year, $126 million contract on Sunday.

I'd take Laroche over Pena.

but I'd take a trade for Fielder over either of them, if the price is right.

what other first basemen are available for signing or on the trade block?

For a name you have not heard, how about a trade with B-more for Luke Scott.  He's not a defensive wiz, so maybe not a Rizzo type, but he "looks like a ballplayer" and would not lock you out of a cheap late off-season pick up for either left or 1B if someone falls through the market or if we trade Willingham.  They should have an interest in Desmond, and perhaps there is another arm we could get thrown in.

Orioles just traded for Mark Reynolds (Arizona).  Does that help with Scott's availability?

(Hey, I can double-post too!)

I don't think so if Reynolds is to play 3d.  Scott would be available because he's near the end of arb, a bit older, and they have Reimold and Pie to cover DH and LF.  He's sort of their Willingham.

we've been linked to James Loney by the media hacks.

wonder how much his bat negates his glove.

Loney for Willingham?

Didn't he have an OPS of .723 last year?

Young guy that could potentially still figure it out... but not super excited about his ceiling.

Not for Reynolds. Storen may not be a true power closer, but he's young and already effective in the pen. I wouldn't move him for Reynolds.

Reynolds has the potential to be Dunn++, not to mention a ++ fielder a 1st.

Didn't it already get pointed out that last year was a dip from the norm and that his road splits are significantly higher than his home splits?  Nah, that would mean looking at the whole picture and we know you won't do that.

Significantly higher as in .729 OPS on the road last year. Don't let the facts get in your way.

no, it wasn't pointed out. Loney was just mentioned by name. nothing specific about him.

of course if you weren't so busy trying to insult the entire board all in one post, then you'd have read enough to know that.

one of these days you'll come down off your self-imposed asshat pedestal and we'll be able to have a civil discourse.

in regards to Potomoac Cannon's coin flip statement of Loney's Splits, a simple look at Baseball Reference for 2010 shows that :Loney hit:

.265/.337/.380 (.717 OPS) with 6 hrs, 15 2bs, 31 walks and 47 strikeouts at HOME.

.269/.320/.409 (.729 OPS) with 4 HRs, 26 2bs, 21 walks, and 48 strikeouts on the ROAD.

no, not SIGNIFICANTLY higher on the road. at least not to the extent that PCan is suggesting.

Well, significant is a quantifiable statement, but not one I feel like spending any time on for a sucky hitter.

Home/Away splits in the NL West are weird. Arizona & Colorado are two of the most hitter friendly while San Diego,Los Angeles and San Fransisco are the exact opposite. He seems to be regressing as a hitter.
