Maybe it'll be someone none of us have heard mentioned.

Ding. Ding. Ding.  Has anyone other than Pena been mentioned for the Nats outside of this board?

yes. Laroche, Pavano. Webb, Pena, Garza, Greinke have all been mentioned outside this board.

Do you just pretend that Mike Rizzo didn't says that he's a huge fan of Carlos Pena?

I think Pena's always had a slider speed bat and now it's a beer league speed bat. I don't care how good his defense is, he's no longer a suitable MLB firstbaseman.

That's okay, I hear Adrian Beltre still has a pretty good bat.

(Still don't totally buy that rumor...)

That'd be the biggest overpay for defense in the history of the world.

Who knows if Beltre's defense would even transfer to a brand new position.

It worked out okay for Pujols.  I don't think third to first is nearly as big of a defensive leap as most other positions.

What I'm saying is... Beltre losses a lot of his luster by moving to the defensively inferior position.

from Beltre's perspective I think the extra $$$$ would more than make up for the loss of luster....but I still can't see another right-hand bat full time at 1st.

I think these discussions have proven that P-Can is nothing but a pee can.

It will probably be Pena or La Roche but I wouldn't mind Carl Crawford for LF and move The Hammer to 1B.

Can you imagine Crawford, Werth, and Harper in the OF for 2012? That is a wet dream even I couldn't imagine.

I can imagine Crawford, Werth and Harper in the OF for 2017, too.  That is a dream I'm not sure I want to imagine.

LaRoche.

and you insisted with all your arrogant fury that Pena was never mentioned by Rizzo and Rizzo was not interested in him even a little bit despite what all opf the beat writers and at least two national writers claimed.  and then Rizzo himself came out and slobbered all over Pena. which you conveniently ignored.

anyhow, a "RizzoNoOneSawItComing" move would be a trade for Prince Fielder during the winter meetings.

at which point I would :worship: Rizzo.

but my money is still on Pena. where there is smoke there is fire, and damn near EVERYONE saying how ridiculously high Rizzo is on Carlos Pena, including Rizzo himself, looks like smoke to me.

Reynolds to the O's nearly complete. Are their prospects that good? Should have just given them storen.

for the record, I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to be wrong about us signing Pena.

I wouldn't complain one bit.

Not for Reynolds. Storen may not be a true power closer, but he's young and already effective in the pen. I wouldn't move him for Reynolds.

Actually, we probably could have gotten away with Burnett and Peralta :(

It can't be Pena, that is what everyone is saying.

These are the Nats...they are the fort knox of baseball transactions. I would always expect the unexpected when it comes to the front office.

LaRoche has interest in playing for the Nats

http://therocket.mlblogs.com/archives/2010/12/laroche_has_interest_in_playin.html

I know he has put up okay numbers but I am just not a fan of him. Would prefer Pena or someone else.

I'd take Laroche over Pena.

but I'd take a trade for Fielder over either of them, if the price is right.

what other first basemen are available for signing or on the trade block?
