Adrian to the Red Sox is official pending a physical.  There are reports that Arizona is looking to move Mark Reynolds now.

What are the odds that Rizzo goes after Reynolds for the 1B job?  He's signed fairly cheap through 2013 and he's Ryan Zimmerman's former infield mate from UVA.

MLBTR saying the Diamondbacks want relief pitching for Reynolds. Joel Peralta would be nice to have right about now...

getting reynolds and having him play a new position is more of a bowden move.  no chance rizzo goes for that.

rizzo has made it clear he is after a defensive first baseman.  none of the options are appealing.

just a terrible decision to pass on dunn.

Zim is pissed about losing Dunn. Bringing in one of his best friends might help

but to play where?  he has played 34 games at first in his career.  again rizzo wants a defensive first baseman.

oh and reynolds batted .198 last year.

The Red Sox deal for Gonzalez involves one of the two first basemen in high minors, Anthony Rizzo, as well as a #2 cliber 20 year old pitching prospect, Casey Kelly, from AA, and Rey Fuentes, their 2009 #1 pick.  Unless the Nats were willing to put in Norris (or Harper  ) I don't think they could match the position prospects.   Maybe JZ, Marrero, and Eury Perez would have been in the ballpark, but Fuentes is likely to have more power than Perez will develop and I think is a very effective baserunner.

That said, it makes a very good 1b LH bat, Lars Anderson, blocked.  I'd kind of pound my fist on the table and scream if our Rizzo does not get on the phone with Theo and offer Burnett and Flores or Ramos for Anderson.  Anderson was a top 20 prospect going into 2009, but had an awful year at AA Portland. This year, he destroyed AA for month, was bumped to AAA, had a terrific 2d half, and was the regular 2d baseman in September.  This guy is about 21 and major league ready.  Jump on it.

Talking to Ben last night, I suggested there are some incredibly nice matches between needs and talent between the Red Sox and the Nats.  Willingham is a great platoon match for Ortiz / Drew, Lowrie would be a very nice 2d baseman paired with either Desmond or Espinosa, they have Kalish / Ellsbury / Reddick for young, rangy OFs with MLB bats, and some hard throwing minor league starters like Stolmy Pimental.  They need bullpen help, so Burnett or Clippard might be useful, could perhaps use a catcher if they decide to go with 3 and use Salty as a 1b backup, are probably looking for righty bat who could play OF/ 1B / DH, and are looking for corner OF prospects in high minors with power like Burgess, perhaps.

This makes too much sense to me.  Someone explain what I'm missing.

You're missing the Intel that the front office has. You are probably on to something but I have very little belief in the front office to have the same knowledge. Maybe they do, we just don't know about it. You are definitely correct though. I would be on the phone with them trying to snag some of their players away because obviously the major league team doesn't need much of the minor league help yet.

Lars Anderson turned 23 in September. But really, he is now as perfectly blocked a prospect as Wilson Ramos was. I would really like to see that deal done. And if one of the Red Sox speed/defense outfielders can come help us out, that would be great too. JCA for GM.

Random thought: what if we got rid of Dunn and are saving money because Riz plans on offering Albert Pujols 10/300?

JCA for GM.
Thanks, but I would have only gone 3/$39MM, with a $13MM option and a $1MM buy out.

Maybe the Latin America ops head, who is from the Red Sox org, might have some knowledge of their system.

Then Mr. Cheap storms in the room and crucifies Rizzo for such an offer.

I think the ultimate possible roster would be

2012 Nationals
Greinke - Strasburg - Znn - Lannan - Maya
Zmn - Pujols - Harper - Norris/Ramos

In OOTP baseball, I could totally make that happen!

My OOTP GM credentials are that the 2012 Brewers starting rotation is Zach Greinke, Cliff Lee, Yovani Gallardo, Rick Porcello, and Ryan Dempster; Porcello actually has the best stats of the five. I acquired Greinke for Kyle Drabek straight up. 8)

How exactly are the Nationals going to get Greinke for free.

I'm pretty sure Houston is joking since the Nats didn't want to splurge a 4th year on Dunn so giving Pujols 10 years (considering they are the same age) cannot be realistically expected.

They aren't, they just deal every prospect not in that post. :D

I could enjoy watching something like:

2 Pudge/Ramos
3 Anderson (Morse)
4 Lowrie
6 Espinosa
5 Zimmerman
7 Morse / FA
8 Morgan / Bernie
9 Morse / Bernie / FA

If you put in the name "Werth" into the OF, that's  :az:  worthy.  That infield would have no one older than 26 on Opening day and would all be under team control for at least 3 years.  The OF would have 2 good to very good defenders (CF and one corner).

Make it so, Rizzo.

I guess it is possible that the team could get much, much better by trade, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Also, anyone like Ty Wiggington? He has good position flexibility.
