Flores was solid for a catcher, as a hitter... but you put that bat at 1B... and it becomes terribly underwhelming.

His height becomes a factor defensively as well.

We don't worry about a first baseman's offense in Washington...

It's going to be Pena or LaRoche or Flores or Morse or Willingham or Marrero. That's my prediction and I'm sticking to it. In order, of course. ;)

Adrian - the reports are that the Red Sox are aggressively trying to trade for him but other teams are in as well.  He's slated to make $5.5 million next year, probably $15-18 a year after that.

What are teams going to have to give up to get Gonzalez?  I can't imagine what the Padres are gong to expect to get for him.

..and, honestly, what is the point in your team existing if you can't keep your best players?

i'm guessing zimmermann and norris would be part of any deal.

I'm sure they'd want more than that because lots of teams want him.  This bidding war will go off the charts.

Yodaer argues for Berkman:

one year place-holder for $7 million.
Sign him we must before the LAC side invades.

From Boston.com

Gonzalez-Sox talks heat up

We have confirmed an ESPN-Boston report that trade talks between the Red Sox and Padres on first baseman Adrian Gonzalez have heated up.

The two sides have discussed some of Boston's major prospects - Anthony Rizzo and Casey Kelly among them - according to a major league source. Things that would have to be worked out would be a contract extension for Gonzalez, who earns $6.2 million this season, and there would be obvious questions about his health after the slugger had shoulder surgery. Most teams require that a major player pass a physical in order for a trade to go through and that would be the case here.
[snip]
The Padres can receive the best package of players now. The package could include three or four Sox players, one player who may be major league ready. The financial package for Gonzalez would likely be in the form of a six-year extension that could average close to $20 million per season.

The Sox recently courted Carl Crawford and Jayson Werth, but it's been clear all along that Gonzalez is the prize.
Kelly was recently identified as one of the top 10 prospects in the AFL by Jonathan Mayo at MLB.com.  Only 2 seasons out of high school. Rizzo is a pretty highly thought of AA 1B who overcame hodgkins disease a couple of years ago to have a very good season in A / A+. Stepped back a bit last year.  Outstanding glove. I'd say the Nats comparables would be Cole and maybe Marrero.  But that would just be the start.  The Padres want more.

Cole can't be traded though.

Did Kelly ever pick a positions in SS or Pitcher?

Pitcher.  Mediocre results last year but good secondary pitches and great fastball command.  Cole can be a PTBNL 6 months after he was signed.  I use Cole more as a comparable, not as the guy to deal.

No. We definitely wouldn't. A guy who received 4/57 had a lower average by 25 points last year but had basically the same return (102 ribs to 101. 38 to 33 homers. etc). That same guy played worse defense than Agonz yet still better than others on the market. We wouldn't offer a guy a contract like that because we didn't even talk to him after the season ended. We have a less than 1% chance of trading for a guy like that. If we somehow do... I don't know what I'd do... (besides get excited.) Just saying.

Well, supposedly the Red Sox are closing in on Adrian Gonzalez. Looks like it'll be all minor leaguers.

Bummer. My unrealistic dreamer kept telling myself snagging Gonzalez would be an upgrade over Dunn.

I curse the thought but for some reason I cannot shake the thought that Mike Morse is gong to be our 1B next year. :?

Probably.  Did you catch the line from the FO about wanting bench players that will accept their roles?

I suspect that means Roger Bernadina is trade bait or gone.

I'm praying he means Ivan Rodriguez to the bench.

Wouldn't you think they want 65% Ramos and 35% Pudge?

Or Bernadina in CF over Morgan.
