Rizzo: "Nah, you ask for too much."

Kilgore's story.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/nationalsjournal/2010/11/the_nationals_search_for_a_top.html

I'm not sure what you're getting at but to me that story can be summarized as "gosh, other teams are going to be competing heavily for these guys too?  Shucks, we didn't think of that!"

Gimme a break.

I think the real issue is that the only number ones out there are Greinke and Lee. the Nationals were never expected to outbid the Yankees or Rangers for Lee and Greinke would cost the farm, and it is doubtful the Royals want to trade him at all.

I am also glad our GM isn't the one calling starting pitching the Easter Bunny. I guess the Giants won the World Series with the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, and Rambo.

Is "Easter Bunny" a Bowden quote?

I've never heard that.

I've never heard that.

It was in the Kilgore piece.

"The challenge, as General Manager Mike Rizzo is already finding this winter, is that's exactly what every other team in baseball wants, too. He compared elite starting pitching to a precious medal; another general manager here at the annual GM Meetings equated it to the Easter Bunny."

So you didn't read the story.

I did, actually.  Reads like a typical fluff piece to me.  It's a complete non-story.  Good SPs are gonna cost a ton because everyone is looking for them.  Rizzo is willing to make deals but "has limits."  Am I missing some nugget of unique insight?

I especially liked "precious medal"

It was funnier when I though Bowden was saying it.

My guess is Dayton Moore probably gave the 'Easter Bunny' quote.

Nats have had "discussions" w/ Carl Pavano

WP Link

Quote
The Nationals are one of "six or eight" teams to have engaged in preliminary discussions with Minnesota Twins free agent starting pitcher Carl Pavano, according to a league source. The Nationals met with Pavano's representative here at the General Manager meetings in Orlando, a meeting designed for both sides to gauge the other's interest.

It comes as no surprise that the Nationals would pursue Pavano, given their determination to find a starting pitcher. Pavano, an 11-year veteran, is one of the top pitchers in the free agent pitching market following Cliff Lee. Pavano became the Twins' No. 2 starter this season, going 14-7 with a 3.75 ERA, 117 strikeouts and 37 walks.

Also, just to check in on this matter, there have been some Twitter rumors about Adam Dunn and the Tigers getting serious in negotiations. From what I can gather, there is not much to that talk. Dunn could end up in Detroit, but nothing with Dunn is imminent, as far as what I've heard.

I think it is pretty fun now with people freaking out about how the Nationals aren't going to do anything and this off-season is a failure when not one major free agent has signed. It would kind of be like people throwing down sand bags in NC when a huricane has just formed off the cost of Africa.

Also so people can freak out more. Even more proof Rizzo doesn't want an outfielder. They are being given away for 5th starters and middle relievers.

Davis would be a solid platoon bat in CF.

Of course, the Nats only want Morgan in CF. They love that he hits .250, plays a half season of defense and gets thrown/picked off way too much.

You have got to be kidding.  That guy is more of a headcase than Wesley Willis was and as much of a glassjaw as Tommy Morrison.
