Johan Santana is terrible this season, and costs a whole lot more. The whole Mets team is overperforming, and lost a series to the Nats. Don't you have friends?

Yeah, you're really going to rip on Santana? Statistically a late bloomer every season. Do you realize Livan is by definition overperforming?

Since this thread is about Hernandez, it seems as good a place as any to ask: What is the correct pronunciation of his first name? Carpenter and Dibble both pronounce it the same way as the name of the Elton John song "Levon," i.e., "LEE-von." I seem to recall that back in 2005 whoever was calling games for MASN then said it as "lih-VAHN" (short "i" sound and the stress on the second syllable). It's hardly unprecedented for local broadcasters to mispronounce a player's name; longtime Caps fans will recall Ed Kastelic, whose name was pronounced as "kuh-STELL-ic" by Mike Fornes and Al Koken until the player asked them to say it "KA-ste-lic" (with the "a" sounding like in the word "apple").

Every time I hear "LEE-von" I get that song stuck in my head.

If by some strange occurence of luck and raquetball he ends up winning 20 games having a low ERA and winning the Cy Young. Just imagine the Fan Graphs articles telling everyone why he really sucks and how he defied logic all season and is the luckiest man on the planit.

People always say luck evens out, but if this were true no one would leave Vegas a winner and no one would ever win the lottery.

That's because they are outliers. You are more likely to get hit by lightning twice (I actually know someone) than to win the lottery. A safer bet is to throw your money into the garbage disposal and hope a couple bills are left unscathed.

As poorly as he pitched last night, and it was clear he was having trouble getting his pitches to work properly, how he limited the damage to 1 earned run and 2 overall in 5.1 is nothing short of miraculous. Have you ever seen a pitcher employ the holding capacity of all 3 bases so thoroughly?

There are some times when the expected probability of hitting some of the extremely large jackpots, is greater than an even bet. When this happens, we've seen "smart money" come flowing in from investment funds and try to buy up as many tickets as possible.

However, they've had trouble executing this strategy, due to 1- other people buying tickets too, and 2- hard to assemble enough buyers to buy enough tickets to reduce the risk. But in probability theory, these bets can be favorable.

The outliers are why people watch sports. People want to see George Mason or Butler in the final four. People want to see Buster Douglas win the title. It is why we watch, and no matter what the odds say the most interesting story is the most unexpected.

Actually last night defined what pitching really is. Don't have crap,can't find the strike zone and have your defense let you down. Still figure out how to get a win for the team.

I really like watching Livan pitch - he is soo calm, cool, and collected-and so disciplined. He is my comfort zone - when he is the starting pitcher, I know we will win, and all will be right in DC Baseball Land.
He is a solid rock out there.............

Wikipedia has an accent over the 'a' in 'Livan', meaning the emphasis is on the second syllable, as in Lee-VAHN. The 'v' sound in Spanish is usually indistinguishable from the 'b' sound, so I guess it's more like Lee-BAHN.
