If Bruney was just DFA'd, he wouldn't be available to other teams yet, would he? We've got 10 days to release him or put him on waivers, yes?

Ah, now I see - we could have traded him. Maybe Rizzo is hoping to send him to AAA and get him "right"

He could be traded for "cash considerations" like Rivera was, unless the FO is really hard up to get keep him.

They could select him off the waiver wire, but then they would be liable for his contract.

Right, it's not open season until he passes through waivers, which I think is 48 hrs. I guess you trade instead of waivers because you can stash him in the minors that way, or is it for salary relief?

Bruney is out of options. If the Nats traded him, he would still be out of options. When he passes through waivers, and he will pass through, then he can either accept his assignment or become a free agent. But either way he will still be paid his $1.5M.

Crap my brain is scrambled. I meant the team could get cash from the Nats to offset the $1.5mil. The other reason to trade is if you think the guy won't get through waivers. I think they traded for Kensing last season.

Sure but whoever traded for him would have to put him on their active roster. Let's be honest, Bruney isn't anything special, as a matter of fact he's nothing but another Hanrahan,Colome,Kensing,Bergmann clone. Yes he can throw 95 but he has no control and his only other pitch is a slider which doesn't work if you can't throw strikes with your fastball.

He fits in perfectly with the Diamondbacks bullpen. Brian Bruney would be a STAR in that bullpen!

The 32-year-old right-hander has a 29-39 career record with a 3.67 ERA in parts of six major league seasons. He split last season with the Minnesota Twins and Florida Marlins, going 1-5 with a 5.63 ERA.

This season, Ayala was 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 14 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers' Triple-A team in Albuquerque before being released on May 17.

Ayala will report to Arizona's Triple-A affiliate in Reno.
