The Padres will sign WILY MO PENA

Interesting.  Hoyer was with the Red Sox when they traded Arroyo for Pena and when they traded Pena for Carter.  He may be thinking, "if I can just get a hot streak from him, this guy has the power to hit it out even in Petco."

DFA'd.  The Astros also claimed Anderson Hernandez off wavers from the Indians.

Elijah Dukes is putting up videogame numbers in Newark. I don't have the exact numbers here but his ops is crazy.

I couldn't find Dukes seasonal OPS on the Bears site, but he has 19 hits in 60 ABs. 3 doubles and 3 HRs, 5 walks, with a .317 BA. So obviously he's doing decently, although he is facing no-name pitchers who even I could get a hit off of with enough ABs, but while I don't feel like doing the calculation myself, I'm not sure that line equals "video game numbers" OPS.

Roughly (not accounting for sacrifices and HBPs):

19 + 3 extra bases for the doubles + 9 for the HRs = 31 bases on hits / 60 ABs = .517 SLG.

24 on base / 65 PAs = .369 OBP.  This would be lowered for sac flies and increased for HBPs.

OPS .886 against < MLB pitching.

Not too far above what he ought to be capable of at the MLB level, if he didn't have his head so far up his ass.

Not so impressive in context. That puts him as #7 in OBP and AVG for those with more than 58 AB's (Dukes has 60) and 3rd in SLG, The Newark Bears site doesn't have OPS.

Mike MacDougal made his season debut for the Cardinals tonight, pitching a scoreless inning in the 12th and picking up the win. While I wasn't a fan of him being our closer, glad to see he's back in the majors and hope he does well. Guess with a four game series against them a month from now, we will end up seeing him excluding an implosion or injury.

Dave Duncan can fix anyone but Jeff Suppan. Mike MacDougal is not Jeff Suppan, Duncan will fix him.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Yankees got themselves an insurance policy without having to pay a premium, or in fact, anything at all, when they acquired veteran outfielder Austin Kearns from the Cleveland Indians on Friday night for a player to be named.

The move was announced shortly after the Yankees lost 3-2 to the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field, cutting their lead in the AL East to one game. Manager Joe Girardi described the 30-year-old Kearns, a veteran of nine major league seasons, eight of them in the National League, as "another corner outfielder who gives us depth and experience, a right-handed bat with power."

Kearns, who had previously played for the Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals, was hitting .268 with eight home runs and 43 RBIs in 83 games with the Indians this season. A career .257 hitter, Kearns has played mostly as a right-fielder and has generally hit in the middle of the batting order, two areas that will be tough for him to crack with any regularity on this team.

He's referring to Ryan Church, and it was actually part of a 5-player deal.  Snyder and AAA SS Pedro Ciriaco to the Pirates for Church, RP D.J. Carrasco, and IF Bobby Crosby.

Church reminds me a lot of Michael Morse (without the Roids usage).

So Kearns and Johnson together again...

The positive aspect to that is they do have Teixera at first. Meaning if Johnson somehow doesn't get hit by a bus, then run over by the ambulance come to save him while he is on his way to his first game back from the DL, which is unfortunately a near certainty, he will be DHing. So the chances of Kearns breaking his neck while they converge on a popup are unlikely. Now the odds of Kearns bat flying out of his hands during an AB and, again breaking Johnsons neck? Well, that's the only bright side to the bus and ambulance. Johnson won't have to worry about it.

You notice how when they played Kearns in left, A-Rod decided to take a day off?
