Marlins signed RHP Mike MacDougal to a minor league contract

MacDougal was the Nationals closer at the end of last season, and converted 20 of the 21 save opportunities he had. His WHIP of 1.52 isn't among the league best, but he's certainly a serviceable option at the end of a game. Leo Nunez is likely to get more of the save chances, but injury or ineffectiveness could see MacDougal back closing games in the NL East again this season. In addition to his minor-league contract, MacDougal was given an invite to spring training.

Surprising. I guess he wants to fix his rep, but that's not a lot of money. Nats should have offered him that much.

Of course, MacDougal is a RHP, but his 1.76 WHIP vs LHB is better than Pinto's 2.00.

This may be geeky but I'd love to apply a political economy filter to which universities and high schools tend toward 'undiscovered' schools. I'm thinking scouting follows talent and wealth (indirectly through high quality sports programs) and that there would be some interesting correlations between schools which certain teams recruit and where certain talented players emerge. Granted I have nowhere near the time to do that anymore and that taking the minors into account would make it a small book in and of itself.

It's $1 million, $1.2 million with incentives.

I would say that I guess that puts his place in MLB in perspective but, it is a $1 million, which seems like so little but it really isn't.

Why not? Those who said he had "lost" his power were not considering that his wrist may be continuing to strenthen, especially with another offseason to work on it. I would not be a bit surprised to see Nick knock in 20+ if he gets more than 450 PA's this year.
