I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me in plain english why they think Hudson's bat is going to produce significantly more runs than Guzman's.  On a better offensive team, Hudson produced about the same number of runs per game as Guzman last year.  Is there something special about the Nats lineup that plays to Hudson's strengths better than last year's Dodger lineup?

I'm not denying that Hudson is better, and I'm not trying to be a jerk about this, I just want a real explanation instead of bunch of convoluted stats.  When I say runs are all that matters, I'm told that it's out of the batter's control, but when I ask why one batter is better than another, I'm given all these constructs that essentially boil down to projecting how many more runs one guy is worth than the other.

Hudson will allow Morgan more chances to steal. He'll force the opposition to throw a couple more "high stress" pitches per game. After that it's a crap shoot that depends on what Zimmerman & Dunn do with their AB's.

So why didn't you tell me which ones I should be looking at?

Wins and losses.  Those are the only stats that truly matter.

Come on man you are just making up stats now. Just when I think I got all the new ones figured out they invent 5 more. I know what UZR, wOBA, and WAR are, but what in the green freaking hell are wRC and wRAA. And seriously if someone can't tell hudson is better than guzman by just looking at BA/SP/OBP then they need to take the pencil out of their eye.

I'd like to nominate this for post of the year - 2010.

We're talking about how to construct a team.  Since players don't bring wins or losses with them, we have to rely on other, less conclusive attributes to judge their contributions.

Alright.  I'll take that at face value.  Anyone else want to take a shot at educating the dumabss? ;)

Hudson will put more ducks on the pond than will Guzman.  Even in beer league that's good.

Ducks in the pot > Ducks on the pond.

Besides they'd be geese anyway, then all we'd end up is with geese poop everywhere  :spaz:

Goose poop is bad news, once it dries hard you get really bad hops in the infield, and if it's warm and soft, the ball slips out of your hand.

Actually Hudson & Morgan might out talk Collin, which for entertainment value is well worth the $$$.

Hudson's going to be on base at least 25 more times this season than Guzman likely will.

That's 25 more chances for Zimm and Dunn to bat with runners on base.

I think that's well worth the cost.

I'm wondering, If we get Hudson, Guzman will probably still start (at least at the beginning of the season). We all know how Guz pouts when he's dropped in the lineup, so where will they bat? Will Nyjer get dropped so one of them can lead off?

I'll not pretend to know more than anyone else, but it seems to me that most of what's being discussed here is paralysis by analysis.

If' it's 2-2 in the fifth inning with Johan Santana pitching to Cristian Guzman with the bases loaded and two out, does wOBA really matter?  Is anyone really out there saying, "we should've had Hudson's WAR in that situation?  Sheesh....

Why can't evo's statement: "And seriously if someone can't tell hudson is better than guzman by just looking at BA/SP/OBP then they need to take the pencil out of their eye" be pertinent?

Especially since the cost seems to be about 5 million less than Guzman.

Not true.

Awesome, thanks for debunking that. That would have been a Bowden-esque move, not Rizzo's style.

That could be a lie on their part. Especially with the sources from within the MLB saying that they did.

Since they don't release who put a claim in on someone it will just have to be he said/she said.

Somehow I knew you'd say that.

What reason would they have to lie about something like that?

Embarrassment for actually trying to pick up a player like Guzman.
