Last year, Hudson signed for $3.38m with $4.62m in incentives based on plate appearances, and he made just about all of his incentive.  About $500k was deferred, if I figured it out right.  To sign for $3m with incentives that only take it up to $4m is a big step down for a guy who played well (but was beat out by Belli).  Frankly, this is a lot lower than most of us speculated.  Good thing none of us are GMs.

From Kurkjian:

Quote
The Washington Nationals appear to be getting closer to signing free-agent second baseman Orlando Hudson to a one-year deal with a club option for a second year, a source close to the situation told Tim Kurkjian of ESPN The Magazine on Sunday.

The contract would be for $3 million with incentives that could easily reach $4 million for 2010, which is money the Nationals have available for that roster spot.

The recent signings of Orlando Cabrera by the Reds and Melvin Mora by the Rockies should help the Nationals%u2019 pursuit of Hudson given that two more infielders are off the market. He has yet to sign off on Washington%u2019s offer. Hudson had a salary of about $3.5 million with the Dodgers last season while coming off wrist surgery and made the All-Star team. But he made almost twice that much in the final year of his contract with the Diamondbacks in 2008.

Well, it's vaguely worded, but reads to me like $3m plus up to $4m incentives = $7m max.

Yes, when I first read it i thought the incentives could bring it to $4m, but if it is $4m in incentives, then that is a very fair deal.  If he passes on it, it must be because it is in "confederate money."

I posted several days ago about the lack of interest in FLop by any team. He has slightly better numbers than O-dog and does anyone have any info why no one is signing him. The Twins were supposed to be interested and that leaves Kennedy and Hudson left for those seeking a 2B. I am not sure Cabrerras and Moras signing strengthens our position to sign O-Dog.

Also, Bowdens lack of effort in signing Hudson last year is not boding well for us as Hudson said he never took a phsical for the Nats. Bowden signing D-Cab and his failure to pursue Hudson are still lingering effects of his stewardship after a years absense. Never mind the  Lo Duca , Estrada and Flop signings .

One can surmise that his reputation precedes him, but I haven't heard anything more sustantive.

that's the exact kind of contract we should be giving him.  at least 3 million guaranteed with a bunch of incentives if he performs/stays healthy/etc.  get 'er done!

The Cards will probably get Lopez. A Lugo/Lopez platoon wouldn't be too bad.

lack of interest for Lopez stems from the fact that everyone knows that if their team is not seriously contending for a Playoff spot(meaning in 1st place, or very, very close to it), Lopez is going to dog it.

and most of the real contenders are already set at SS and 2B.

I was thinking about this the other day. He's shown that he fits this mentality but did Flop ever say anything about this team in an interview?

yes, he basically said "freak you" to the whole organization, as soon as he put on his new uniform after we traded him.

Ok. I mean I specifically remember watching him and how unclutch he was at hitting I just forgot if there was any direct quote he said about this team.

Why would Hudson sign here over the Twins? If Minny offers him enough money he will go there to play in a brand new stadium and have a good chance of making the playoffs.

Yeah, the Twins are a dangerous suitor because they're such a nice team to play baseball for.

Boris Ladwig continues to tweet like a maniac, in helpful ways:

Quote
I was told the #Indians, #Rockies and another American League team -- not the Twins -- are also in the mix for 2B Orlando Hudson. ... My source told me, "Orlando Hudson wants to sign with [the #Nats] real bad." but Orlando Hudson appears unwilling to play for the #Nats at a discount, according to the source. We'll see.

Also:

Quote
JMW4th @washingnats why are we signing hudson? our current second base options are more than adequate Guzman FTW! Alberto Gonzalez! YES!
Ladson @JMW4th I disagree with you.

If they don't pay Hudson, will Chief and the others admit that the LAC? There is no excuse not to give him $4-5 Million to play here. This is chump change.

Hahaha. If somebody paid me $4-5 million, I wouldn't have to work for a couple decades.

I don't know about that but it certainly would be nice. But there is no reason the Nats who still have a very low payroll cannot spring a few extra million to get Hudson here. Rizzo has said we are not signing any more substantial starters so there is no excuse not to bring Hudson in.

freak Adam Kennedy. Go for the best player available. He wants to play here and the guys on the team want him here. Get that crap done. :whip:

Yeah, I agree with you. That's definitely right. We've probably got, what, $5-7 mil before we equal next year's payroll? The need for another starting pitcher can be filled via trade.
