Drew Storen chat on WNFF - this Sunday Jan 10, 8 pm
« on: January 07, 2010, 07:28:18 pm »
Posters, lurkers, guests, we are very thrilled to announce that Drew Storen will be our guest on WNFF this Sunday at 8:00 pm, to chat with us, and take questions for an hour or as long as his typing fingers hold up.  Drew knows Collin set the bar high last weekend, but he's eager to connect with fans of the team that selected him in the first round in this most recent draft.

Hope you can join us this Sunday evening to welcome Drew into the WNFF community.

Let me suggest that we start putting some questions for Drew here.  While we will probably open a new thread for the chat, it will give us a chance to hone in on what might be fun to talk about, and give Drew a chance to preview what sorts of things we are interested in.  Consider these sample questions.

I will start.

Drew, several times in the last few days we've seen mention that the Nats might consider converting you to a starting pitcher.  Whether this is informed reporting or mere wild-arse speculation is open to conjecture.

Has the club spoken to you on the topic?

What do you think of the idea?

Wait, when did we see this??

My question for Drew:

What are your hopes and goals for the 2010 season?

Boom goes the dynamite!

Drew, coming up through college as a closer, that is something that would have never happened just a few decades ago.
How has that affected your game prep?

And the all-important question:

Did you prefer Hagerstown, Harrisburg, or Hagersburg?

I can identify both on a map and know the difference at least. I've been to both. How many Nats fans or even players can say that?

What was the single biggest adjustment you've had to make moving from College to the Pros?

Drew, on Twitter you often talk about playing Modern Warfare 2. Are you a big gamer? If so, any recommendations on any really good PS3 games?

Also, are you more excited to make your major league debut or see yourself as a video game character in the MLB games like 'The Show' and the 'MLB2K' series?

To tag on to this question, what is your kill/death ratio in Call of Duty? We should totally play 8)

Oh man, I feel sorry for you guys. I am going to try to get Drew to join me in a rural Indiana nostalgia-fest. He's from Brownsburg, just a few miles west of Indy; I was born and raised in Columbus, about 40 miles south of there.

Sample question: Ritter's Frozen Custard: best thing ever, or better than the best thing ever?
Sample follow-up: Why on earth did the Brownsburg Ritter's close? You clearly didn't eat there enough. Gosh.

EDIT: Actually in all seriousness the Indiana thing is important to my career as a baseball fan. Drew will bear this out - we just don't have a team to root for. The Columbus newspaper printed Reds box scores, but I didn't want to be a Reds fan (even as an 11-year-old I knew about Marge Schott!). Up in Indy they did some reporting on the White Sox. The Indianapolis Indians have a really nice ballpark, but it's hard to really root for them ... the only major leaguer I saw play for the Indians was Jason LaRue. So I was a guy without a team. Spent a couple years cheering for the Athletics, because they won the World Series the year I was born; spent a couple years rooting for the Indians and White Sox. In 2005 I chose the Washington Nationals because they represented a fresh start, a team I could cheer for and not need a reason to.

So I guess the question for Drew that comes out of this might be who all he cheered for as a kid. Was it hard to pick a team? Would it have been easy to get used to the idea of playing for whoever drafted him?

Actually I'm interested in how players grow to love (or not) the teams that draft them. Say I were good at baseball and got drafted by the Pirates or Yankees or something. Is it easy or somewhat time-consuming to adjust to knowing who "your team" is when it's a team you may not have previously liked?

I don't think this is a problem for Drew, but I do think it's interesting.

That's a great question!  If I had any athletic ability and was drafted, I'd be bummed if I were drafted by a team that I disliked as a fan.  I have "my" teams, then most other teams in the sport I can respect and I wouldn't care, but one or 2 teams that I dispise and wouldn't want to be drafted by.

Drew, this is the only question I can think of right now but, what will your theme music be when you come out to dominate on the mound?

Drew- How much influence does the pitching coach vs. the manager have on your professional development?

Thanks so much for this, Tom.

Drew - thanks for answering our questions.   How closely does the team medicial staff monitor your strength and conditioning during the season and in the offseason?  do they give you exercises to prevent injury or deterioration, or tell you when to slack off if you are getting worn down?
