Let me buy you a Bailey's Comet next summer

It's a deal.    If it has Baileys in it, it's gotta be good.    :)

I imagine if you squeezed plyboard and juice came out of it, it would taste like gin.

We can't all be as great as you, BiL

I know we said no booze stories, but this isn't a story.  I love bourbon and so everyone just assumes I like scotch and/or Irish Whiskey.

I don't.

:couch:

I drink bourbon primarily.  Like 95% of my whiskey drinking is bourbon.  But there are some damn fine scotches out there even for those who skew bourbon.  Balvenie Doublewood is great. It's about twice the price of everyday bourbon though.  But better

I think all the hating of a particular booze is unwarranted.  There is enough variation within each genre to find something good

That, and it's booze.

It tastes of juniper. It's delicious with the right mixer. Which would be tonic.

Right. Humans were made to enjoy the flavors of things that can be toxic or poisonous. :)

Isn't all booze potentially toxic? I'm going to have a Bulleit on the rocks now.

I know you mean their rye, of course.  When I first started in on rye Wild Turkey 101 was my go-to staple.  When it disappeared off the shelves and all I could find was 81 I switched over to Bulleit and was happy.  However, I have since discovered Rittenhouse Bottled in Bond and I find it to be a great whiskey at a Bulleit price.  100 proof and full of spicy goodness, a great value.

I hear a rumor that Wild Turkey will start releasing the 101 again and I'll have a decision to make.  Oh, what the heck, stock one of each.

I was shopping today for a whiskey gift and researching Bowman's Limited Edition whiskey and learned that the one bottle I owned, the best damn whiskey I've ever tasted in my life, was a one off release.  Damn.  Apparently once a year they do a special release, and different every year.  This year is a wheat and it gets a really strong review here:

Quote
I have a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle 15 year old from the 2014 release that is not near as good as this bourbon. I know taste is subjective but that is my opinion.

Upon further research into the procurement vagaries (basically endless surfing) I learned that Va ABC has a lottery for rare whiskeys, as well as a first-come first-served pay in advance reservation for certain releases.  They even produce a publication, and have mailing distribution lists for afficianados.  Overpriced for sure, but if you can get a rare Bowman's once a year or one of their other special  offerings might be worth it.

My wife bought me a bottle of Knob Hill rye, so I've got quite a bit to get through before I can try anything else. But I'll put Rittenhouse on the list.

I like Knob Hill rye too.  But consider your cabinet space, if enough you can always stock multiple bottles and just move your tasting around, rather than do them serialy.

I buy anything that is a good deal.  Got knob creek for 21.99 last week.  Had to do it.  Liquor pricing in DC stores appears random sometimes

I never shop in DC liquor stores but don't they have the best in the DMV generally?  Schneider's, Calvert Woodley, Imperial all have the reputation for large selection at the best prices in the area.

When I was in PG I always shopped at Silesia Liquors in Ft. Washington.  PG has real liquor stores, not state or county owned/controlled which is a big plus.

Va is generally awful for price or selection, though they will order stuff for you.  Because I work in Montgomery, I usually buy my liquor there (Fallsgrove) as the prices are better than Va by a significant margin.

Calvert Woodley and Circle way up Connecticut Ave have mind-blowing wine selections.

Schneiders appears to have everything.   Their prices are mixed.  I know how much a couple products should cost or at least how cheap I can find them if I look. It's great being able to walk to three liquor stores in ten minutes.  Quality ranging from nice to bullet proof glass protected.  Bet you can guess where I got the knob creek

I lived a block from Circle for 16 years. It is the single, solitary thing I miss about living inside the DC city limits.

You must have found Eldorado if it is preferable to being one block from the National Wine Museum.

Heheh. No, I found square footage. 5 people living in a 2Br 700 sq foot apt with a 75lb dog and two cats meant you never, ever had much in the way of privacy or alone time. We moved to a three level, 4 br, 1400 sq ft end of the row town house with a good front and back yard. It cut down on the level of squabbling and bickering and tension like you wouldn't believe.

Also, no people thumping around upstairs all hours of the night. One time I heard a lot of bumping, crashing and cries of pain. I finally went upstairs to check and see if it was a domestic abuse situation. Turns out they were practicing dancing and embarrassed/appreciative that I cared enough to check.

Besides, Leesburg has a Total Wine & More about a mile from my place. Takes a lot of the sting out of it.

Too much of anything is too much.

That having been said, I like Scotch - especially The Famous Grouse and various single malts (best place to get them is the duty-free shops at London Heathrow airport - they have free tastings too).

I had a tasting of Old Bust Head Vixen Irish Style Red Ale recently. Really enjoyed it. Has anyone actually been out to their brewery and can share thoughts on the experience? Thinking of taking the wife out there some time.

Ate dinner with a friend at a new brewpub in Leesburg called 'Dog Money.' They brew on site and have I think six on tap and two in casks, plus additional seasonal options.  Reasonable prices, good beer, tasty pretzels with a great IPA Mustard. The pickle that came with my Reuben was oddly seasoned. It wasn't unpleasant, but it was not at all what I normally expect a dill pickle to taste like. I tried their Red Ale and a Black & Tan. Bad pour job on the B&T, but both brews were tasty.

And I think whiskey is a good indicator.  There's different styles and each has its benefits and drawbacks.
