But as the Washington Post's Dan Steinberg points out, the team still sells Bullets merchandise, "profiting off a name that they decided was too heinous to wear on the court." The real problem with the Washington Bullets name was that it didn't alliterate, and the reason it didn't alliterate was that Abe Pollin stole the Baltimore Bullets.

Steinberg's been kind of an ass lately. Pollin was well respected and liked, and did a ton of charity work. I honestly don't think he gave a crap about the alliteration. They almost named the team the Sea Dogs

I agree he is to blame, but the Wiz could say "we support Gilbert in this time, agree with the league, blah blah blah" Instead they say "we are disgusted, unacceptable" and remove jerseys, banners, posters.  I bet they don't remove any jersey or ticket revenue they get from Gilbert.

It's bullcrap that David Stern lets his emotions get in the way of making a decision.  If your gonna suspend him do it when he admitted to having guns not after he calls you "mean".

Sick of hearing the media talk about the name change from Bullets to Wizards.   Gilbert's gun was unloaded so it doesn't freaking matter.

What? Yes it does matter. You can't bring weapons into the Verizon Center, loaded or unloaded.  :nono: You  can't carry around or stored  unlicensed gun(s) in DC or the Verizon Center.  :nono: It's the law. Additionally, NBA has very strict rules about players in possession of fire arms.  :nono:

This is not funny, and it's not a matter of supporting a player, like Arenas, in this matter. Support him for what? Being dumb, being stupid, making fun of the seriousness of the situation in front of the press/media? The Wizard organization stood up for what is right in this matter.  And David Stern did what was called for in this matter.

Again, each gun unlicensed is a five year prison term, so 4 unlicensed guns that Arenas had, times 5 years, equals 20 years in prison. I think to most people a potential of a 20 year prison term would matter, not only to the player, himself, but his family.

you know what is interesting?

Chris Wilcox played the other day with no problems. He was once caught(not sure exactly when) in a car with an unlicensed, loaded hangun, with spent ammo casings in the car, and ammo. but the NBA allows him to play freely.

gilbert didnt get suspended for the guns. if that were the case, half the nba would be gone.

gilbert got suspended because he basically spit in Sterns face with the whole "finger gun" thing he did.

if gil hadnt been joking around about the issue so blatantly and instead took it seriously, he would still be playing.

mind fact.

You really think a lot of other players have guns in their lockers? If so, I'm not going to those games in March I have tickets for. AFAIK the Wizards haven't made any statements guaranteeing a gun-free area at this point. I'm still very seriously considering demanding a refund.

Honestly, I don't give a crap if two rich idiots have a shootout at the OK Corral on their own time. But there's a lot of kids and families at these games. It's entirely unacceptable.

in their lockers? no. but i amm confident that many, many nba players have unlicensed guns and travel with them. they just dont get caught like gilbert did. and if they do, they dont treat it like a joke, like gilbert did.

Like I said, these guys can throw their lives away off the court, I don't care, but a lot of good people in the stands expect a modicum of safety during a basketball game not featuring Ron Artest.

I can't believe you are defending Gilbert, JMad.

Stern had no choice but to suspend him indefinitely. The incident itself was bad and to make matters worse Gilbert just mocked it and did not take it seriously.

It wasn't just the gun imitation with his hands thing. It was his interviews with the media, his twitter postings, etc that demonstrated a severe lack of knowledge of the complexity of the situation and that he had made a mistake at all.

He is not fit to play in the NBA under these circumstances. I keep hearing that the Wizards are hell bent on voiding his contract and are doing everything they can to rid themselves of anything involving Arenas so they can start to move on.

Until the Wizards pull all Arenas merchandise, make the Phone Booth a gun-free zone, and donate some money to victims of violence, they are in my doghouse, too.

I thought they did pull all Gilbert merchandise.

Did you see Jamison's speech before the game the other night to the fans? You should watch it.

Until the Wizards pull all Arenas merchandise

I read an article a few days ago that they had in fact pulled references to Arenas, including merchandise, from the Verizon Center.

Good first step. But they need to make changes in player policy - wonder if their agreement with the players allow locker searches. Probably do because the lockers are property of the Verizon Center.

Thank you. But I better go back and read the rules before I re-input what I had.....let's see any mention of using the word "Airhead" to a poster (of course in a sophisticated manner), or calling him an "idiot" ...........yea, I better go back and check the rules.....
