We pretty much locked the #1 pick up with tonight's godawful game (Three hits...) Pittsburgh winning against LA (Whodathunk?) means we're 5.5 games ahead for the #1 pick. We with 9 games, Pittsburgh with 10 left. Pittsburgh was starting to scare me that they might end up catching us these past two weeks, but I feel 95% confident right now we'll get #1 next season. As bad as this season has been, and how much worse they've been playing the last two weeks, that #1 draft pick is *all* we have this year. My god, if we had lost even that to Pittsburgh it would have been gun to head time.

Nats loss just eliminated the Os from contention for the #1 pick.  Down to the Nats and Bucs.

The Pirates don't have the guts to lose out like we do!  Hell, they're probably trying to AVOID losing 100 while, for us, at 100 losses, we just put the pedal to the metal...in reverse...while blindfolded.   :|

The debate can now start: (different thread?) Assuming numbers hold up, Harper, Ranaudo, or someone else?

After Monday, September 28th's Games:

The Race for the 2010 1st Overall Pick:
Washington    53-103  (.340)    ----    (Streak: 1 W; Last 10: 3-7) *6 games left*
Pittsburgh      59-96   (.381)   6.5 GB  (Streak: 2 W; Last 10: 3-7) *7 games left*
Baltimore       60-96   (.385)   7.0 GB  (Streak: 11 L;  Last 10: 0-10) *6 games left*

On Pace to finish: 55-107

The O's are mastering the art of the September lay down. 11 losses in a row. They are close to catching Pittsburgh for the #2 pick.

We might as well go on a 7-game win streak to end the year now.

MLB has the oddest tiebreaker for draft position.  Where another sport might use head-to-head competition or some other mechanism based on this year, MLB uses the previous year's record to break a tie for this year.

So, in the off chance that Pittsburgh loses out and we win out and both finish 59-103, we'd get the top pick because we were god-awful, last year too!  Of course, if MLB used head-to-head as the tiebreaker, we'd still get it because we lost the season series to the Pirates, 3-4.

In Major League Baseball, losing 100+ games, back-to-back, really does have its advantages.   :|

We always have these meaningless win streaks at least once or twice a season, usually in August or September. They wouldn't be so bad if the team wasn't already 30+ games out of first when they happen.
