Okay, I don't actually moderate one, but I belong to 3 different ones.

An elephant won't fit in my house.  Fish will.

Maybe you should look into pygmy elephants.

There are also some fish that won't conveniently fit in your living room, either.

That's why I keep a smoker in the backyard

Sharks are way cooler than elephants.  They don't take massive craps everywhere.

I won't argue with that.  I have tons of shark books at home.

Interesting footnote:

Quote
When the shark attacks Hooper's cage, there's live footage of a real Great White with a rope hanging from its mouth. This shark's mouth is clearly much smaller than the shark's mouth when it attacks the boat moments later. These scenes were filmed by noted shark photographers Ron Taylor and Valerie Taylor with the help of shark expert Rodney Fox specifically for the movie. Because the Great White sharks they filmed would be smaller than the mechanical shark in the movie, they constructed a smaller version of Hooper's shark cage. Inside the cage they alternately used a small mannequin or a little person. One of the sharks they attracted got caught in the cage's cables and tore it apart trying to escape. The footage was so good that they changed the script to reflect the destroyed cage and Hooper escaping by hiding on the ocean floor. However, the small person used in the scene refused to go back in the miniature cage, which was damaged in the incident.

Never woulda guessed Tom, that's really cool.  I'm actually looking to make my first venture into the big aquarium (75ish gal.) world.  Just beginning to research all that will be required for that and what I actually want it to be.

Floor. Make sure your floor can handled the weight you're talking about 350-400 lbs in a small area.

I can think of many hilarious ways to test that.

I just want to let you guys know that I hate running this forum.  It's embarrassing.  I can't wait to be done.  It's just a paycheck...  oh wait, nevermind that last part.  What I really want to do is be an elephant herder.

If you want to be a Cat Herder, then you work for EDS.  ;)

My #1 tank is a 75g planted aquarium.  As it's in a prime viewing area for guests to our home, I bought a tank that is really a piece of furniture, very clean appearance - no visible wires, lights, pumps, nothing but wood, water, plants and fish.  It does keep me motivated to keep things well maintained.

Blue's point is on target.  I would consider our house to be shoddily built, the minimum floor strength to meet then code (1981).  I reinforced the flooring by running studs up from the concrete basement floor, and haven't observed any sagging.

I like it!  I may come around again and ask for tips getting started with a planted tank later this spring when I'll know for sure if I'm even going to get the place.  If I don't, I probably will wait to take on such a venture.  It'd be on the main floor of the building with a concrete floor and nothing but dirt all the way to China underneath it so I'm not overly concerned about the floor.

Cool, let me know if I can offer any advice on a planted tank.  One thing about concret floors, they can be uneven, sometimes significantly so.  This can place inordinate stress on the seams of a tank, so it's best to shim or otherwise adjust for imperfections.
