Wouldn't he have made more money if he chose to go through the arbitration process? I figure he just saved the Phillies $9 million or more.

exactly. Hamels would have cleaned up in Arbitration, and the Phillies knew it.

the fact that the Phillies only bought out his Arbitration years and did not extend past that says something. I'm just not entirely sure what, exactly.

It says that pitchers can have their careers ruined by a simple shoulder injury at the drop of a hat.

It's probably most likely that Hamels didn't want to sign to any deal beyond his arb years, though.

Derek Lowe gets $15 mil a year, and Hamels gets a little over 6?  Braves got fleeced.

He was really injury prone coming up- he may be hedging against getting injured

You can cross the blO's off the list for potential suitors for Dunn.

Seriously.  If Orlando CABRERA is willing to move to 2B, wouldn't he be a better option than Hudson?

Cabrera will cost us a draft pick, Hudson will not. Hudson is the better player in my opinion.

That's not true. Hudson is a Type-A Free agent. The D'Backs offered him arbitration.

Dunn was also a Type-A Free agent but they didn't offer him arbitration so no picks have to be given up by the team that signs him.

I think Hudson is a type A
Dunn isn't because The Reds didn't offer him arbitration. Hudson on the other hand was offered and refused.
If the Nats get Hudson they need to give up their 2nd round pick.

From Chico:

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/nationalsjournal/2009/01/the_market_for_adam_dunn.html

Quote
Right now, Adam Dunn wants a four-year, $56 million contract. And who knows, maybe he gets it. Maybe he also gets a Lamborghini, a new house, and exclusive use of the Burj Al Arab helicopter pad. Maybe he can hire Pat Burrell to babysit his kid.

Across baseball, Dunn's reported asking price has left baseball executives -- including those at 1500 S. Capitol St. -- with their eyebrows just about raised up to their hairlines. Certainly you cannot fault Dunn for trying to name his price, but for the time being, he seems nowhere close to getting it. One agent I spoke with today said that "I think Dunn will get a max of $5 million per year. Anything more than that and I'd be surprised."

  That's Dmitri Young money. At that bargain we would be foolish not to sign him.

nah, we should have offered 5years, 80m right from the start.

that's how teams who don't have cheap owners do it.  :?

throw the whole bank at him, and do it early.

I'll answer:

SIGN ADAM DUNN.

O.k., your turn again.

I've been away for a few days and obviously someone has stolen Minty's logon ID in the meantime.

I don't recall anyone here, even the Dunn worshipers, suggesting the Nats offer him anywhere near 5 years and definitely not at that kind of money. Saying that is as stupid as suggesting that some people here actually believe that spending money amounts to winning no matter who it is you give the money to.

I guess it remains to be seen how much it will really take. I doubt it will be 5 million though.

They are going to have to sign eventually. Catchers and pitchers report for ST in less than a month.

Dunn won't sign for that price until April and it would only be a one year deal. It looks like he is already taking a pay cut. I doubt he wants to take one that is that big though.
