It's a good move for them to try and immerse him in the home town sports environment. This bodes well for them. It would actually be a big stage for him to announce he was signing there (a la Clemens getting on the PA at the Yankees game.)

Of course, the backfire on Angelos would be for the Steelers to beat up on the Ravens, have the Ravens fans filter out early, and show a crowd filled with Steelers fans waving their towels. I'm sure that Teixiera hears from his father all the time about what it is like to be in the Os stadium and feel overrun by Yankee and Red Sox fans.

Ultimately, I think that DC and the Os are getting played as well. The Nats offer was legitimate, but there was no way that was going to be enough. If the Lerners don't make a subsequent offer that sweetens the pot, then this was all BS by the Lerners. Nice try for attention, but they don't get points for making an offer that was destined to be a runner up. A sweetened offer with a take it or leave it attitude is fine. But so far, they have shown nothing.

I didn't expect them to get Teixiera, but they have to come away with significant gains this offseason, or they will remain a disgraceful ownership in my eyes.

Are Angelos and Ripkin totally estranged? I would think having Cal in the suite would be a nice kicker.

I heard Ripken say on ESPN that he has a luxury box at the nest for Ravens games.

I would think Hanging out with Cal would beat the crap out of spending the day with a freaking lawyer. But I'd rather watch the Ravens game on the TV at Pickles then spend a minute with Angelos.

I'm looking forward to the Ravens/Steelers game. They're not many good games this week and this may be the best.

Whatever. Teixeira is NOT worth this much money. Not even close. Everyone's been so caught up in the hoopla that they forget that this dude is not worth 9-10 years, $180+ Million. You figure if you are going to pay a guy that much that he is the best hitter in the game and is going to instantly make you a contender. That is just not the case. He's not even in the discussion of the best hitters in the game and he is NOT going to instantly make a team a contender, especially in the case of the O's.

Go to the Orioles, Mark. Have fun making $20 Million for the next 9 years on a perennial last place team that has no hope and no future. Whatever, you're still getting paid right? That's all that matters.

I actually sort of agree with you. I like the fact that we made a run for Texeira but I'll be happy settling for Dunn on a 3-year deal, with a solid reliever like Juan Cruz and possibly a FA pitcher or maybe even Hudson.

this sounds like pre-emptive sour grapes to me.  you'd be doing backflips if he signed here.

Dude, we never had a chance at Teixeira and I've been saying the same thing for weeks (if not months) now. Not sour grapes at all. Teixeira isn't worth that much money, plain and simple.

these days you're going to have to overpay a player, that's for sure.

landing teixeira for an organization like ours, does a lot.  it won't make us an instant contender, but it sends a message to our team, to our fans and to the league that we are getting serious.  it could lure possible free agents and it could persuade current players in system to stick around.

every team around here has some sort of face.  redskins/portis, caps/ovechkin, zards/arenas.
a player of teixeira's caliber doesn't come around so often.  we don't have anyone in the system that can put up the numbers he can and we're not loaded with first base prospects.

i have a question to ask you.  you don't want teix, you don't want dunn.  are you happy with another year of johnson @ 1st for two weeks (and he'll hit the DL), then being replaced by meat hook for another two weeks (and he'll have weight problems), then to have casto/belliard/orr take over for the rest of the season?

or maybe bernadina? 8)

Denials all around

An Orioles official insists that Mark Teixeira will not be attending today's Ravens game as a guest of owner Peter Angelos.

I'm told there's no physical scheduled for tomorrow - which I assumed all along. You need to have an agreement in place before taking that step. You don't make the guy turn and cough while going back and forth on contract terms. And the Orioles probably wouldn't require that Teixeira take one anyway. I doubt agent Scott Boras would go for it, and there aren't any health issues to justify it.

Teixeira might be at the game. Why wouldn't he? I'm sure he's a football fan and it's a great matchup. He might be shown on the big screen, though he's not easily recognized in a crowd. But according to the high-ranking official, he won't be eating crabcakes with Angelos. And this person would know.

I'll duck inside the MASN suite and check, but don't get your hopes up.
Has Angelos ever been at a Ravens' game? I don't see him being a face-painter. But hey, the two franchises are becoming quite chummy. It's a whole new world.

well hammonds, if the Nats do happen to miraculously, by way of an act of god, convince some player who with even a little fraction of a bit of talent to play here(sportsfan seems to think that is utterly impossible), then what would sportsfan nag about?

No one can make your team an instant contender. Not possible. But you sign the guy that much because he is damn good. And when you get the other pieces on the team to perform at the level they need, you'll be glad you have this guy. It seems like your riding this train just to be able to say "I told you so" when the signing doesn't happen.

Not having a shot would be not in the bidding at all. We made an offer, and we have an opportunity to raise it. If you want to look at the negative side of things, thats fine. Lets have Kory Casto start first base this year and wait a couple years to see Rhinehart hopefully perform well up here.

Dunn will likely be a National now that we aren't getting Mark. Bowden is adamant about acquiring a perceived power bat and I think he will make good on those promises.

You don't give a guy this much money over this long of a period unless he is young and one of the bonafide best hitters in the game. Tex is not worth this much. Let the O's overspend for his ass. Every strike out and double play by Teixeira will be like a knife in the gut to Peter Angelos and the O's fans.

I kind of want us to get O-Dog and Dunn more than just Tex now.
I don't really feel comfortable with Anderson Hernandez.
