Dave Sheinin puts a pessimistic spin on the possible offer the Nats may make for Tex.

Quote
Kasten on Teixeira Reports: Not So Fast
Nationals President Stan Kasten said today that reports -- including ours -- of a significant and imminent offer to free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira are highly premature, saying, "You're way ahead of us here."

While Kasten, as is typical, neither confirmed nor denied the Nationals' intentions regarding Teixeira -- or any other player, for that matter -- he felt compelled to quell the speculation that the Nationals, as we wrote last week, are preparing a "competitive" offer to Teixeira.

"I don't want people to have unrealistic expectations," Kasten said.

He seemed particularly perturbed that media and fans might interpret an offer to Teixeira as a ploy to gain credibility with the team's fan base.

My own take: The Nationals are still formulating the structure of the offer they plan to make to Teixeira. However, they also know they cannot compete with the likes of the Yankees, Red Sox and/or Angels when it comes to dollar figures. So they would like to get a better sense of Teixeira's true market before they make their pitch.

Not optomistic at all about the Nats going hard after Tex.  I was always skeptical about their efforts to go after him and now even more so.  I'm not too uptight about it as I think Tex will go to a big market winning team (Anges/Red Sox), but would like to see the Nats start competing for somebody who will be long-term part of this team.

Thank you. Hopefully that will shut up these daydreamers on here that keep going on and on about us actually having a chance at Tex.

Dude YOU shut up.  Some people on here are trying to remain optimistic.  Yeah we all know the Lerners are cheaper than cheap and we won't get him, but let us dream for now.

  Reminds me of that scene in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory where the grandfather refuses to wake up Charlie to let him know that all the golden tickets have been found so the kid can have "one more dream" before they break his heart at not having a shot at finding a golden ticket.

Hang in there hammonds, you'll get your golden ticket.

I can be as optimistic as anybody if there is something to be optimistic about but in this case it is just senseless. Kasten finally put all of this bullcrap to rest today with his comments. We are not in the running for Teixeira and probably never were in the first place.

I think this also proves that Kasten and the Nats FO do not read the papers considering these Tex rumors have been going on for a week and they are only just now saying, "Whoa there, wait a minute..."

I don't think it's fictional. Heck, almost every year I predict for them to win like 85+ games and I always rip on the pundits for predicting low loss totals for the Nats.

I'm very optimistic regarding our Minor League system and several of our players. I think we'll eventually compete but until the Lerners open up the wallets it will be rough.

I don't think I'm a Kasten disciple but I'm not a Kasten hater either. I think time will tell whether Kasten is the real deal or not.

Nah sportsfan your two faced lol. You say your optimistic but your as much as a daydreamer as the rest of us. Saying Bernadinas going to be the starting OF this year and that he is a "power" hitter is on the same fringe as saying were going to get Tex.

Its the offseason, rumors can go both ways. Id rather hope it goes for the best and not hang my head down bashing the crap out of us and ignoring all signs of light.

and for the record, i would like Bernadina to be a great outfielder, but im not on the same path your on.

Bernadina is not a power hitter but he has pop unlike Taveras, Nook, etc. Bernadina will likely not be our Starting OFer and that is only because we have several other players ahead of him on the totem pole. I just think Bernadina would excel playing every day up here. Is it really that ludicrous to think that considering the numbers he put up last year in AA/AAA? I think people just don't like him because the first time he got called up he went like 1/40 and looked bad. That's weak.

What signs of light? We are not going after Teixeira per Kasten and we probably never were. All of that crap was just baseless rumors. Until I see something substantial proving otherwise I will continue go by what is factual.

More like the same fringe as saying we are going to get Sabathia.

nobody ever said anything about us going after CC.  The thing is there is word that we are prepared to offer Teixeira a contract and league sources/media know we are taking an interest to MT.  While Kasten didn't say directly we were involved in the sweepstakes, he certainly didn't deny it.  He did what any good front office member would do and not show our hand.

Do I think we're going to get Teixeira?  No our owners are cheap dicks.  But at the same time for now we're rumored to be involved in the sweepstakes and it's fun to dream.  Just like Sportsfan dreams of Bernadina being a major contributor.  Just like i dream of a Nats-O's world series.  Just like spidernat dreams of ... spiders.

The other thing is, this is Washington D.C. So what he is saying in the interview is the equivalent of "We must leave all options on the table." Or, "I do not plan to run for President in four years." Or, "This thing is a slam dunk." Or, "I did not have sex with Debbi Taylor."

 @ Kool Aid drinkers criticizing sportsfan for wanting to be a realist

Basically, we shouldn't trust any of these "rumors" coming from sports writers.  Between this and Rosenthal's laughable rumor that the Padres were going to trade Peavy to the Yankees, which was immediately squashed by Kevin Towers himself, there's no reason to give any credence to these rumors without direct quotes from key sources.
