The Cycle is such a random (or if not random, at least statistically improbable) phenomenon, I attribute this to the impending end of the world, and not the juice.

No big deal, it's happened before - once - in 1920.

Is it just me, or is the statistical oddity outweighing the acheivement of the cycle? 2 HR's and 2 2B's seem likely to lead to more runs scored.

It's just incredibly rare ... or at least ... it used to be ...

"Hence, statistical oddity" I think a triple play is a real acheivement that boasts rarity as well.

Of course.  If Guzman had been successful in reaching 2nd base instead of getting thrown out, he would have had 1 HR, 1 triple, and 2 doubles, a better day but not a cycle.

QFT   Somebody was even praising the aesthetic value of the cycle.  :?  2 years ago our pitchers nearly gave up a cycle of HR's to the yankees in the same inning.   A-Rod hit a 2-run blast. Posada hit a solo shot. And then Damon hit a grand slam. Good thing we still came back and won that ballgame.

Since 1956, there have now been 135 cycles.

Only 15 players have gotten at least 2 doubles, a triple and a homer (w/ no singles) in a game. Pedroia did that this season.

Only 2 players have had at least 1 double, 2 triples, and a homer (w/ no singles) in a game.

8 players have hit 4 homers in a game.

Ronny, you're way off on the 4 homer guys. Rocky Colavito,Willie Mays,Mike Schmidt,Mike Cameron,Carlos Delgado,Bob Horner and Shawn Green belong on the list.

You're right (it's actually happened 8 times). I must have looked up 4 homers w/ another stat. I knew it had happened before. I just figured it happened before 1956. The other numbers are right, though.

Pat Seerey did it in 1948 after being traded from the Indians to the White Sox. Sportsfan's granddad must have been burning up the telegraph.

That I know of, there has only been ONE walk-off, 3-2 pitch, bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, down by 3 grand slam in the modern history of the MLB.

Do I win something?
