Props to Jason Bergmann

In the 4th inning of last night game, Jason Bergmann laid down a successful bunt. Thus ending the drama at game 136.

Bob Carpenter ran out the '62 Bob Buhl (Zero for 70), I pointed out the Buhl walked and had sac bunts. But we agreed that I was being a dick.

The pitcher's sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning, in fact, helped set up a two-run inning that got the Nationals on the board in a 9-8, 10-inning win over the Braves.

He entered the night 0-for-38 at the plate, and as ESPN.com noted this week, could have been on track for the most futile offensive season ever by a pitcher. Bergmann's only offensive contribution before tonight was a grounder on Aug. 7 that moved Willie Harris from second to third.

With the sacrifice, Bergmann avoids being the major-league pitcher with the most at-bats in a season without a hit, walk, hit-by-pitch or sacrifice. As ESPN.com noted this week, that distinction will remain with Ellis Kinder, who batted 32 times for the 1952 Red Sox.

"It was a relief to get the bunt down, because it scored two runs," Bergmann said. "I've probably cost the team about 20 runs this year. Bunting's important to all of us, and when we come through, that's the joy."

He is still 0-for-39 this season. But for what it's worth, his other out tonight was a fly ball to deep center.

"I've been working real hard all year. I've been putting in a lot more time of late because it's gotten a little out of hand," Bergmann said. "I put a good swing on the ball at the plate. Just a little extra work in the cages--taking extra bunts, extra hacks. It's just something where we don't get a lot of at-bats."

Um ... pretty sure he meant that because he bunted successfully two runs were able to score -- which is right ...

Did you hang out with Minty Fresh?  He made his Terps debut yesterday, in fact I think it was his first college football game ever.

No, didn't see Minty .. I was in section 21 ... it just amazes me how far Terps football has come -- I sat in an EMPTY Byrd during the 90s and now the expansion, the crowd as big as it was for Delaware ... it was incredibly gratifying ... the whole college football experience is such a blast ...

Was in section 10 yesterday, in the midst of the student section. Was pretty fun.

My parents, who to put it charitably are getting up there, always sit in the very top row of the student section, under the overhang of the upper deck.  They love being next to the students, though are a little past the point of wanting to get passed up and down the rows.

Did anyone see that ball he hit?  Yes the outfielder caught it but he sure gave it a ride!   :shock:
