Airline Disgustingness
« on: June 12, 2008, 09:15:34 pm »
Per MSNBC, United and USAir will now charge for a first checked bag. In addition, USAir will now charge 2 dollars for soda and water, 7 dollars for alcohol.

Finally (and maybe worst) Preferred USAir members no longer get bonus miles for being Silver, Gold, etc. on each flight. They also took away their 500 mile minimum per leg that made up for high ticket prices from small airports a few months ago.

Keep paying those CEO's, jerks.

Thanks for filling me in. Now I know which airlines to avoid if I want to fly somewhere.

United pulled the stunt this morning, so USAir matched. I'd wager Continental matches by next week - they are in trouble.

I fly a lot, so I've been watching things fall apart for a long time. Get ready for middle seats, the end of frequent flyer programs, paying for carryons, you name it. :(

I'll be sticking with Southwest when I fly.  And we thought that southwest commercial about being nickeled and dimed was a bit over the top.  Guess the others thought it was a good idea.

Violations of safety requirements
On March 6, 2008, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspectors submitted documents to the United States Congress, alleging that Southwest allowed 117 of its aircraft to fly carrying passengers despite the fact that the planes were "not airworthy" according to air safety investigators.[28] In some cases the planes were allowed to fly for up to 30 months after the inspection deadlines had passed, rendering them unfit to fly. Records indicate that thousands of passengers were flown on aircraft deemed unsafe by federal standards. Southwest declined comment at the time, and US Representative James Oberstar advised a hearing would be held.

On March 12, 2008, Southwest Airlines voluntarily grounded 44 planes to check if they needed further inspection. Federal Aviation Administration claims that Southwest Airlines flew almost 60,000 flights without fuselage inspection. Southwest Airlines could be facing a $10.2 million fine if they violated FAA regulations. There have also been rumors that the FAA knew about Southwest Airlines violations but decided not to fine the airline because it would disrupt the service of Southwest.

Now, this was found on wikipedia, but it gives you a general idea of why he said what he said.

Look up news articles if you want all the details.

Southwest still has 2 free bags. However, they don't fly to small airports, don't fly overseas, and don't have a good FF program. But they are friendly and cheap, the reasons I've liked USAir up until now.

I cashed in all my miles this past year, 4 ski trips.  My United miles card is now free to freak off.

Even SW is losing $$ right now.  The airlines are getting killed by fuel costs.

I'm trying to cash mine in, but all the free flights are booked. I try to use them for the most expensive flights possible, but usually they outsmart you.

I love that clause in all the FF programs that says they can end the program at any time. I wonder if they have the gall to end the program and take everyone's miles away. I know they save a ton of money when they shorten the time period where you have to have some activity before they cancel your miles.

SW hedged their fuel costs by buying a ton of fuel at a locked in price, but that will run out soon.

Sorry, blue.  I didn't mean to sound mean or anything.  And thanks eckseid.   I didn't know about that stuff!  Yipes!  Hopefully they've corrected the problems!

To be fair, American and United had a lot of the same problems, they just fixed them after SW was caught but before they were caught.

Also, I think that was another example of the incredibly dry (and funny) blue911 wit.
