Austin Kearns jacked a three run home run in the Clippers 6-5 victory last night. I know, I know, but you have to think positive. Good for him.

they should try converting davis to 2B.

Davis can play 2B and has played a total of 29 games at the position.  His fielding percentage is actually higher at 2B than it is at 3B, but I would attribute that more to the sample size than anything.  I would not expect Davis really ever to be a guy that will be a starter, but would see him more as utility guy, that could play at many positions when needed (injuries, guy's days off, etc.).  If he were to one day become a starter, it would be because he has some miraculous breakout season or suddenly matures into a much better hitter than many people believe he will become.  There is always the chance, but I think he will become a decent guy off the bench at the major league level, if that.

Third is usually the pits in fielding %. Balls get on you faster & you don't get the PO's to balance it out.

He's also 5 for 8 with a home run, a double and 6 RBIs in two games with Columbus.

Yet but when it comes to Kearns, What happens in Ohio stays in Ohio.

Let's hope not. If he can begin to produce again, it can only help the team. I'm not holding my breath, but it is an attempt to stay positive.

Mas Moves:

Quote
The Nationals have made a couple more moves, one pretty significant:

    * LHP Josh Smoker was sent down to the GCL from Hagerstown; RHP Zach Segovia was promoted from the GCL to Hagerstown
    * OF Garrett Bass was promoted from the GCL to Hagerstown, replacing Aaron Seuss

Esmailyn Gonzalez continues to rake in the GCL!  He went 5/6 with a Double, 4 RBIs and 3 Runs in today's 17-3 victory for the GCL Nats.

He's batting .452 (14/31) with 11 RBIs.

Gonzalez shouldn't be in the GCL much longer, in fact I would anticipate a move to Vermont of even Hagerstown sometime in the next week or two.  In the 7 games he has played down in the GCL, 4 of them have been multi-hit and multi-RBI showings, while only posting 3 strikeouts in 27 plate appearences.  His OPS is .987 as well.  These numbers are impressive even if they are in the GCL.  There are many in the organization that have high hopes for him.  They moved Arias up today to Vermont and Lozada to Hagerstown, but neither of these guys have the performances or ceiling that Gonzalez has.  I dont think it can hurt to send him for a stint to Hagerstown, especially with Lyons to Potomac, to see if he can handle.  Worse case scenario, you try him out, if he doesnt do well, send him back to Vermont.  I just dont see how they can keep him at GCL for much longer though.

In regards to the other moves that were made today, I am glad to see Smoker moved back down.  He needs a little more time in the short season league to work on his other pitches.  He hasn't made it past 4 innings yet and is having trouble getting out of jams, mostly because he is relying on that super fastball of his too much.

In other news, Baez had a rough start today at Hagerstown going 0-4 with 3 SO, but I wouldn't worry too much, he will come around after a few games.  Leonard Davis on the other hand went 2-4 and Rhinehart went 1-4.  Alaniz had a real rough start, giving up 6 ER in 5 IP, but it was off 4 H (2 HR).  The game was against Bowie and Matt Wieters made his debut at AA, also going 0-4 with a SO.  It goes to show you that even highly touted prospects like him can struggle after being moved.

Also of note, the Nationals released RHP Ryan Delaughter last week.    And Bass moves to Hagerstown to replace Seuss.

I'm very happy about the performance of Smiley.  Hopefully, this organization will have a SS of the future, and it won't end up like it did with Ian Desmond.

I'm kinda miffed that Smoker was demoted to the GCL.  Why not just put him in Vermont?  I guess there were roster logistics to take into account, but I'd rather have Smoker face better competition.  He's supposed to be one of our prized prospects.

Speaking of Desmond, is he hurt or something? He hasn't played in a month.

Rhinehart:  1/3 with 2 RBIs and BB and Davis: 2-5 with a HR and 2 runs
Baez on the other handed struggled again, going 0-5 with 4 SO

Potomac's two relievers Beno and Wilkie are pitching lights out.  Each has only given up a single run in their last 10 games, Beno has only allowed 2 hits.  Each of them has a sub 1.00 ERA for the year at Potomac and between them they have let up only one HR (Wilkie).  If Beno can lower his walks a little bit, then the guy could see a promotion, but both are guys to watch in the future.  I have been watching them for weeks expecting their numbers to falter, but they just keep getting better.

Beno has serious control issues to work out before he gets any promotion. 18 walks in 13 innings in Potomac is plain bad. He's been especially wild lately too. He's got good stuff but he needs better command.

He hasnt had any major problems with control until a recent four game stretch.  You take away those four games, where he was playing with a slight injury, he hasnt struggled with control his entire career, including college.  They sat him out for a week and then after getting the kinks worked out in his first game back, he came out two nights ago and pitched twice his normal innings (2.0) allowing 1 BB.  It wont be a problem, I guarantee it, but he can still work on it regardless.

This is from the sporting news:

Quote
The organization also possesses some of the game's most notable relief prospects in Martin Beno, Adam Carr and Zech Zinicola. The 21-year-old Beno has fanned 39 and walked 27 in 28 2/3 innings this season. He has big-time stuff if only he can learn to harness it. Carr, who was a teammate of Beno's at Oklahoma State, is still learning how to pitch after being more concerned with his offense in college, but he's fanned 140 in 117 1/3 innings as a pro. He just moved up to Double-A. Zinicola has a low-90s fastball and a plus sinker. He's the best bet of the trio to have a lengthy career in the majors, but he also has the lowest ceiling.

The pitchers had a dominating day yesterday.

Sportsfan posted Mock's numbers (7 IP 6 H 1 R 1 ER 1 BB 7 K 0 HR) - here are Ortega's for the Dominican Summer League Nationals: 8 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 11 K. Ortega is 20 years old and hails from a town called Mao.

Is Patrick McCoy with GCL?

Nevermind.  I just looked him up and he's with Vermont.  He was never really on my radar.  Looks like he was an '07 draft pick.  What a great draft that was for this organization.  Even if Detwiler continues to flop, the team got such depth.

Carr and Zinicola both picked up wins in relief tonight for Harrisburg and Columbus respectively despite both giving up at least 1 earned run.
