Comfortable...  comfortable...  comfortable pitcher who pitches well for half a season...  deja vu...  where have I heard this before?

I won't try to defend his second half because it was atrocious, but there is a danger in letting a guy who was rated higher than Roy Oswalt as a prospect just walk away when he can be had for cheap.  He pitched more innings this year than he ever has in his first full season back from elbow surgery.  Of course he was fatigued coming down the stretch.

I'm not saying that Redding is the type of guy you want at the front of the rotation, but a guy who is only 30 years old and is coming back from surgery for his second full season could be beneficial at the right price.  I think we'd be fine with a couple of top-notch starters and have Redding for a #5 or a spot starter/long reliever.

There are a lot of "ifs" there, but in theory I agree with you.  Only if he's cheap though.

His ERA started to balloon in June.  I agree with whoever suggested trying him out of the bullpen.  His splits suggest he'd be a good setup man.  Innings 1-3 he's not bad.  He starts going south after three innings and after six innings he's plain awful.

ERA is a flawed stat.  I'd be more concerned with the number of homeruns he gave up this year.  His ERA could've been affected by having hacks playing defense behind him:  FLop, Belliard, Young, et al.  Guys with no range who can't get to balls average players can.

Actually, I think your theory of good for 1-3 innings would suggest he'd make a good long reliever.  Why bury him in a set-up role when he can go longer than 1 inning?  Besides, with his homerun numbers, set-up could be a disaster.

that's a flawed way of looking at this. For that matter, wasn't Jeffrey Hammonds once considered a better prospect than Tood Helton, Jose Vidro, Derek Jeter and Johnny Damon? But other than his juice supplemented season, in Colorado of all places, how did that work out?

But Hammonds doesn't make Jeter, Damon, Helton or even Vidro money.  I would take a cheap flyer on Hammonds.  There's no harm in cheap flyers.  It's the 5 million dollar LoDuca/Estrada contracts we have to avoid.

      Tim Redding, who was horrendous against a college team his first time out, gave up nine runs in two innings against the Marlins in his second outing back from a sore shoulder.

Jay Gibbons, Logan Morrison and Jeremy Hermida all homered during the in-game batting practice session. Redding still has 3 1/2 weeks left to get into shape, but at this point, he looks like DL material.

PORT ST. LUCIE -- The Mets have shut down fifth-starter candidate Tim Redding and will put him on the DL to open the season because of what GM Omar Minaya described this morning as weakness in Redding's right shoulder.

Minaya did not offer a timetable for Redding's return, but indicated it would be well into April at the earliest before Redding could be back.

Redding, a former National signed to a one-year, $2.25 million deal in the offseason, had gotten off to a late start this spring due to the effects of offseason toe surgery. He finally admitted the weakness in his shoulder after getting bombed in his first two spring-training appearances.

His most recent appearance, Thursday night here against the Marlins, saw Redding give up nine runs on eight hits (including three homers) in just two innings.

That disaster came just four days after Redding was torched by, of all people, the University of Michigan for five runs on five hits, including two homers, in one-third of an inning.

"As a whole, he lacks strength in his shoulder area," Minaya said. "We will let him rest for a while, make sure that his strength comes back before we put him back on the mound."
