Redding definitely looked like hell tonight.  There's this unnerving trend of our starters looking markedly worse during their second turns in the rotation.  If Bergmann has a worse line than last time, we're in big trouble on Wednesday.

How's the vindication business lately? Tim Redding treating you guys right?

Yum. Yum. Tasty crow surprise. :) Anyone got a second helping?

I'm sticking with him as the surprise of the year.

LOL, he had 4 negatives vs. 3 positives, doesn't sound like he merited a thread title mention to me.

Sorry Tom. Below is my revised post.

Tim SUPER K Redding is a BEAST whose AMAZING, FREAKISH ATHLETICISM will INSPIRE THE ENTIRE TEAM to CHAMPIONSHIP caliber VICTORIES with his SMILE and MENTORING. He'll LEAD THE PITCHING STAFF to EIGHT AND HALF INNINGS A START, EVEN MORE VICTORIES, and WIN TWO Cy Young AWARDS in a single season. Plus He's a :pimp: and BETTER THAN THAT CLOWN Brandon Webb. JUST CALL HIM MR CURLY W. Y'all are wrong about Tim. He's the BESTEST!

EDIT: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship:

According to your logic, he had a good outing.  4 IP 1ER, thats all you gotta look at right?  Or do you only use runs, earned or not?

disclaimer: i did not see the game

He was pretty bad.  Ok, so he would have been out of the inning without damage, but that doesn't mean he didn't throw beachballs the rest of the inning.

Here are some of his comments after the game, per the Post this morning:

Quote
And, then, there is Redding, who said sternly, "Back off the defense." Redding was in position to get out of the five-run third without a run. Runners on second and third, eighth-place hitter Alfredo Amézaga at the plate, pitcher Andrew Miller on deck.

"If you want to talk about an error, talk about the 2-2 pitch to Amézaga with first base open and two outs," Redding said. "That's the biggest error of the game. That cost us the game. That's on my shoulders."

Redding was supposed to throw a fastball off the plate inside, pitching around Amézaga to get to Miller. Instead, he got too much of the plate, and Amézaga lined a two-run double to right. Miller, who hadn't put a ball in play in his career, followed with an infield single, and that led to Ramírez's home run.

"Those are the kind of mistakes that lately are hurting us," Acta said of the pitch to Amézaga.

Just like 1 great start last time wasn't necessarily indiciative of a Cy Young, this could be a fluke as well. A below league average ERA (still at 2.00 right now) and a bunch of quality starts could still be possible.

Isn't that old, long gone news and no longer our problem?

Your irrational defense of him was what I was referring to. Your hate and love of pitchers seems based on nothing.

You really have trouble defending your points don't you? My love/hate relationship with JP has no point in a Tim Redding thread. I've moved on from JP weeks ago. Your the only one around here with any kind of obsession with him. But I admit, your not the only one in love mediocre pitchers.

I've been served too much crow lately and this thread keeps it coming like an all-you-can-eat buffet.  NOTLD, I have no excuse for Redding's performance last night.  I can only say that fortunately Redding doens't either and I hope we see very few outings like that this season.

Every pitcher has his bad days, hopefully this was just one of those and not the norm from my favorite Nat.

Yes, let us hope this type of outing doesn't happen again.  Redding has been known to get shaken up at times when things go bad. He just needs to calm down, take a breath, and concentrate on the next pitch.

My favorite Nationals 25-man pitchers (in no order):
Hill
Redding (numbers don't lie, he's pretty good most of the time)
Rivera

Example of a Pitchers I can't stand:
Carlos Silva

People wanted us to shell out serious cash for Silva. That's ridiculous because he's the definition of mediocre. My 3 favorite pitchers listed are purely because they are the best we have. If we signed someone better, or if Jordan Zimmerman or Jack McGeary or Colten Willems were ready to play, I would list them.

JP was just a an example of your defense of a guy who had made crappy start after crappy start, instead of a guy who had a gem followed by a stinker.

Everyone here is falling all over themselves re: Lannan, who has shown promise but isn't Greg Maddux yet. Track record is nice.

I know it doesn't mean anything to most of you, but I like how Redding defended his fielders and shouldered the blame here.  He pitched terribly and he knows it.

The run in the first was caused by Milledge. But the third inning is all on Tim.

I did not see it. But only one was run was earned - and there were only two walks - but 3 errors. Seems like plenty of blame to go around.

In this case, the fact that the runs were "unearned" does not do justice to how bad he pitched.

Ok - I will defer to those who witnessed the crappiness. So his .82 ERA is misleading :D

Very true.  The pitch to Amezaga was inexcusable.  At least he acknowledged as much.

Redding pitched 4 innings and only yielded 1 earned run.... sometimes numbers tell huge lies or as tomterp said it

Bump for our pitching staff getting their act together. I'm liking Chico, Lannan, and Redding right now, with my fingers crossed for Hill. With Perez as #5, maybe things are coming together. If someone starts to suck, we bring up Balester or O'Connor.

Keep on rollin' TRed - keep us in the game with those quality starts and veteran presence.

Is he really mediocre, NOTLD?

Uh...yes. My opinion that he is a #4 or #5 starter hasn't changed. He is barely getting to the sixth inning intact, he gets rattled, and he would still be a low starter or in AAA on any other team.

I'll take what he can give us, but I'm not about to purchase a Redding jersey either.
