NEED RECOMMENDATIONS

THINKING OF REPLACING STORM WINDOWS WITH MORE EFFICIENT ONES; ESPECIALLY THE ONES THAT TILT FOR EASY CLEANING. ANYONE HAS HAD EXPERIENCE RECENTLY WITH THAT?
PRICE RANGES?

We replaced our windows but it was some years ago. I think that the price will vary depending on how many windows you are replacing and what grade you're buying.

Depends on number of windows.  We talked to Applebee Windows (not same as restaurant) and to do almost 20 window sets, it would have cost us around $25K.  Needless to say, we still have our old windows.

Are you talking about storm windows, or replacing the entire window?

If you're talking about replacement windows, find a contractor that uses good windows, like Simonton or Certainteed. I've heard that Thompson Creek windows are pretty good, too. If you can't do a web search on the window brand, think twice.

The Anderson replacement windows (Renewal) are beautiful, but at quite a premium.

I installed Simonton windows (myself). Replacement windows make an enormous difference, but it takes quite a while for the investement to pay off.

Installing a standard double hung replacement window, including cladding, calking, and insulating around the window could be $500 a window. But depending on how much work the contractor has, it could be significantly cheaper, so shop around.

Shop around. That's seems very high, unless that includes several bay or bow windows, doors, etc. I bought very nice Simonton's for roughy $260 per. Double that for installation and your talking about $500 a window. 20 windows at that price should be $10,000.

We had one big picture window (with a double hung on each side of it) to be done and double window.  Plus 11 regular double hungs.  So, not as many as I messed up and said before.  But the price wasn't any different.

That's pretty much what it costs...a grand a window, if done properly.  Properly means a quality double-hung window (say, Anderson or Pella) with a professional installation AND a professional removal of the old windows (including insulation of the empty space where the lead weights used to hang).  You can get crape windows for $300, but I wouldn't allow anyone to put holes in my house for crape.

I've never used them before but isn't there like a heat shrink plastic you can put on your windows from the inside to keep cold from leaking in or heat out.  You put it on and shrink it with a hair dryer or something.

Gburg, am I wrong about this stuff.

I don't know whether it's the case in Maryland, but in Virginia I believe the power utility will send someone out to do an energy audit at no charge. They will make recommendations for things that you can do to conserve energy. You might also look into energy-saving programs for senior citizens. One of your local hardware stores might also offer free seminars along those lines.

They have that stuff on Amazon. I got the Twin Draft Guards from Amazon too, but they make the door hard to close

No, the shrink wrap style stuff works very well, but it's a little fragile and has to be put up and removed/discarded each year.

There used to be a company called "Inner Storms" that made removable, interior storm windows, which could be installed and removed each season. They could fit much more tightly than exterior storm windows. I haven't seen them around much.

You can get pretty good quality windows for in the neighborhood of $250 - add that again for installation. Anderson replacement windows and Pella replacement windows are equisite, but very expensive. I mean, if you have an interesting old house that you're trying to improve, spend the money. But if you have a 1980s colonial that already has vinyl windows with between-the-glass fake mullions, I wouldn't spend a grand a window for replacement windows.

But that's just my humble opinion.

NOSPIN, this is the company I was thinking of:

http://www.stormwindows.com/why.htm

But it's all D-I-Y. I don't know if there are companies that install these or not.

The Home and Garden Show is at Chantilly Expo Center.  If you want to see a bunch of Windows guys in 2 places (both the NORTH and SOUTH Halls), then go there!  I was there last night looking for contractors having to do with Mold Remediation of moist basements.  Got some good info.

Don't ask.  I'll update my leak post later.  Its a neighbor that had the leak and leaked into mine.  The mold inspection news is not good with the solution exhorbitant!  Details later.

Oh, and NOSPIN.  I belong to consumers reports on line and tried to do screen shots and cut and paste about windows for you.  Hope you can read it.  It has lots of advice.  I can send it to you or you can go to the library and look it up.

Or you can join Consumer reports.org yourself for $25 (I think) and read it online yourself.

Uh-oh, doesn't sound good...

Good thinking on the Consumer Reports info. I think that Washington Consumer Checkbook had a piece on windows at some point, but I'm not sure when. Both of those publications might also be available via nospin's local library.

Ah. A leak in a neighbor's house. My guess is it's the ones that don't talk to you?

Was it a plumbing leak? If so, are you considering pursuing an insurance claim?
