He is lucky to be alive...I haven't read up on the whole deal, but it sounds like his carotid was completely severed. That's heavy duty...
I remember walking down around Dupont Circle back in the mid-90s around the time that Zed got his first serious NHL contract and left Portland Pirates Motel 6/Greyhound road trips for charter flights and fancy suits, where we saw him sit through like three lights at Connecticut Ave & M St. in his new Ferrari, totally oblivious to the honking taxicabs & such as he played with all the controls on the dashboard. He gave a huge grin and a thumbs up when he saw us waving, and then tore off down M St leaving a thick strip of rubber. Hope he makes it back to the game.
However, the best thing would have been to drop and try to slow your heartrate down, while compressing the wound. Skating around keeps your heartrate up and pumping blood out the wound. Plus, then whe you eventually pass out, better if you're on the ground already than to fall and risk further injury.
