Awesome match so far. Federer is flying all over the court and playing great defense. If Nadal's legs don't give out on him pretty soon, I'm going to be convinced that he's on steroids.

Yeah. It's something like 16-2 Federer.  Roddick's looking good today, though.

i hope Roddick can pull this off.  I am HUGE Federer fan, but i want him to beat Nadal to earn the record.  It would be fitting.  Plus, who doesn't like an upset?

I'm sure it was a good match but imo the "epicness" of such matches is always deflated when the guy with the 16-2 odds wins.  It's like watching a close Nats game and saying it was a good loss.  Blah.

i watched from like the 3rd set on. then went to the gym at about 11-11 and monitored the situation.  too bad roddick couldnt pull it out. he played well. there were a lot of times you thought he would give in, but he never gave up. pretty crazy he held every serve until the last game (unless they traded breaks somewhere between 11-11 and the end).  it also looked like he just shanked the last point. tough way to lose after playing well for so long.

not a bad fall back final considering nadal v federer wasnt an option

damn! i'm like the biggest tennis fan in this forum probably. what a match! roddick was amazing on serve, such a great match. imo the most amazing part was the 2nd set when federer was down 6-2 in the tiebreak and won the next 6 pts to win that set 8-6. that was the turning point; if he lost there, he had like no chance of winning the match down 2-0.

I was pulling for Roddick.  He's a semi-local kid (born in Omaha but moved to Florida when he was young and still a huge Huskers fan).  I like to pull for the locals.  Maybe next year...

US Open time!

I'm heading out soon, catching a train to NY with my friend. We're going to see a ton of matches tomorrow, and then come back tomorrow night. Should be awesome!

Was pretty awesome. 2 baseball related things:

Arthur Ashe is right outside Citi Field, and I mean right outside. We saw it on the way, and I have to say, it's plastered with ads. My friend who I went with was a Mets fan, so that was kinda funny. And during the matches, I could turn around and see Citi Field maybe half a mile away.

Other thing is, last night we went to the Bobby Valentine Sports Bar for dinner. They had tons of sports memorabilia signed by him and stuff. Food was good too. Just thought it was funny, cuz you know, this forum <3 him.

I grew up in Queens (if that wasn’t already obvious from my ’69 Mets posts).

During the tennis boom of the 70s, I went to the US Open at Forest Hills every year.   Had a great, great time!

The greatest match I ever saw was a night-time five-setter between Roscoe Tanner and Ilie Năstase.

The Open moved to Flushing just about the time I left NYC and I’ve never gotten a chance to see a match there.  Hopefully some day.

Funny that this thread should appear again.  Over at another forum a similar ‘athletic appearance take’ was applied as it refers to female golfers.

Some interesting evolutionary process is at work that is making females athletes (at least in tennis and golf) a lot more attractive now than the days of Billie Jean King, Betty Stöve, Babe Zaharias and Laura Davies.

And as supremely attractive a Maria Sharapova is, on a scale of Russian women in general she’d be about a three.  If any of you have not traveled to that part of the world recently, your jaw would be dropping to the floor.

The most outrageously beautifully stunning woman I ever saw in my life was working as a cigarette vendor in a small dingy former Soviet restaurant in the middle of nowhere.

Or, as one construction worker said to me once, “Even the cleaning ladies are beautiful.”
