Heath Ledger was found dead at his Manhattan residence, a police spokesman confirms to the Associated Press. He was 28.

Police say the death may be drug-related. The NYPD spokesman tells AP that Ledger had a massage appointment at his Soho apartment. When the housekeeper went to alert Ledger the masseuse was there, she found him at around 3:26 p.m.

He did not respond when they shook him, and the housekeeper called 911, The New York Times reports. He was pronounced dead at 3:45 p.m.

Authorities later said they did not suspect foul play but that pills were found near the body.

The New York Times also reports that the apartment in which he was found is owned by Mary-Kate Olsen. A source tells PEOPLE Ledger was subletting the apartment from Olsen.

Ledger was last spotted publicly in London on Saturday on the set of Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Photos show Ledger wearing a clown costume. Other pictures of Ledger out of costume show him with long brown hair and a dark goatee.

The Perth, Australia, native was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for 2005's Brokeback Mountain, on whose set he met – and began a romantic relationship with – Michelle Williams. Theirs was described by others on the film as love at first sight. (PHOTOS: See a complete timeline and photos from his life.)

Their daughter, Matilda Rose, was born in New York on Oct. 28, 2005. Ledger and Williams, who shared a brownstone together in Brooklyn, split in September 2007.

Ledger began his acting career in 1996, when he was 17, in an Australian TV series called Sweat.

In August 2006, Warner Bros. announced that Ledger would play the Joker in The Dark Knight, a sequel to 2005's Batman Begins.

Man, this sucks! Another great actor lost.

I heard something about that on WTOP. A shame to die so young.

OMG, I am really shocked.  I mean REALLY.  This guy was awesome and was only going to get bigger.

His role as the "Joker" in the Dark Knight is his last performance...creepy.

Man, I'm really quite bummed about this news.

His father just gave a statement that this was a tragic accident. Lends some creedance to the drug-related theory.

Major bummer.  At least with River Phoenix, one saw it coming.

Its always tragic when someone's life is snuffed out so young.  There's a People Magazine I was perusing thru the other day.  The whole issue were people who died young:  Elvis, Diana, Colbain;  its a thick issue.

Prescription drugs were found at the scene but there is no evidence that it was foul play or a suicide.  I am guessing he might have had a bad reaction.  Sort of like what happened to Bruce Lee.

An autopsy was done at 9:30am this morning but results are "inconclusive" and more tests are needed.

Don't toxicology reports take awhile?  Like 6 weeks or something?

They said something like they would probably take 10 days or something.  Not sure what tests they are performing.

They also said he had pneumonia.  It could have been a combination of things.   :'(

From The Smoking Gun:

Ledger Died Of Accidental Overdose
Coroner reports "acute intoxication" led to 28-year-old star's demise

FEBRUARY 6--Heath Ledger died of an accidental drug overdose, according to autopsy findings released today by the New York City medical examiner. Toxicology tests revealed that the actor's January 22 death resulted from "acute intoxication" brought about by his ingestion of six separate drugs, according to the below press release from the ME's office. Those prescription medications included two sedatives, two painkillers, and two anti-anxiety drugs. "We have concluded that the manner of death is accident, resulting from the abuse of prescription medications," the coroner reported. Ledger was found dead last month in a rented Manhattan loft.

Makes this suck worse, really.

That seems like a lot of drugs. I mean more than a legitimate doctor would prescribe.

With is schedule and travel he could be seeing lots of doctors. And once you get good and drowsy maybe you forget how much of what you've taken. You just know you still feel bad.

What a pity.
