Rosenthal with Nats rumor stuff
« on: November 12, 2007, 09:37:29 am »
Per Ken Rosenthal, FOX sports Nov. 9

The Nationals want to sign free-agent center fielder Andruw Jones, sources say, but only at the right price. It's unlikely the Nationals would give Jones, say, $16 million per season. But if the Nats were getting a perceived bargain, one rival executive says, they would jump.

Nationals team president Stan Kasten says he opposes adding a premium free agent to a rebuilding club, and some in the industry doubt that he could strike a deal for Jones with agent Scott Boras. Kasten, however, recently visited Jones at his Atlanta home, according to the Washington Post.

The reality is, the Nats should be motivated to make a splash. They open a new ballpark next season. They badly need a slugger, not to mention star power. And Jones, 30, still would be in his prime if the team became more competitive in two or three years.

At the moment, the market for Jones is unclear. The Giants and White Sox are two potential suitors. The Dodgers also could be a possibility, and the Padres might become involved if Jones' price drops. But the Orioles are out and the Rangers seem to want a younger, more inexpensive center fielder.

A number of teams, including the Red Sox, could join the bidding if Jones is willing to sign a one-year deal in an effort to rebuild his value. Boras, however, scoffed at the idea that Jones might not land a significant multi-year contract.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nationals right-hander Garrett Mock is pitching well in the Arizona Fall League, and could be the team's No. 3 starter next season. The Nats would like to trade for another young, major league-ready starter — and the Mets' Kevin Mulvey and Twins' Kevin Slowey both fit that description. However, the Indians' Cliff Lee would be a more established option. Nats outfielder Ryan Church, a left-handed hitter coming off a 15-homer, 70-RBI season, continues to intrigue many clubs.

Man, this is typical Rosenthal stuff. It must be nice to get paid to speculate on the obvious. It certainly seems he's reading alot into a visit to Jones. This is going to come down to money. If they can get Jones at a reduced price, that would be great. But one would expect that they would have to match any offer out there, so it won't come cheap unless every other intelligent GM has soured on Jones or doesn't need a CF.

Any deal with Church going out, means we have to have a good bat coming back or being signed as a F/A.  At present, Church is the only left handed bat we have in the outfield, and he's our current center fielder given Logan's inability to hit right handed pitching.

Mock has always had a reasonably good ceiling as a starter. He was among the D'Backs top 10 prospects in 2005 and this past summer they say he came back too quickly from his knee injury. According to the Farm Authority, when the Nats got him and Chico from Arizona, Mock was slightly ahead of Chico, and Matt Chico turned out to be the Nats workhorse in the rotation this year.

With the talent of the pitchers the Nats have either acquired or drafted since the Lerners and Stan Kasten took over, it wouldn't surprise me a bit if any of them made the roster out of spring training.

Yeah, not to defend Rosenthal and the rest of the league tools like him, but suggesting Mock as a potential #3 is not outrageous given what the organization has in hand. He didn't say that Mock was a #3 for everyone, just the Nats. Of course, a bulk of anything that comes out of a stooge like Rosenthal or Olney is nothing more than the stuff they get from scouts. Since they've been touting Mock for a while, they certainly want to see him pan out to make themselves look good. But in the case of Mock specifically, he was indeed given close to a universal thumbs up from the talent evaluators, so this has been something many have been waiting for but delayed by injuries.
