LOL, I think I just lost all respect for sportsfan's baseball knowledge.

Kenny Lofton has a career f'ing OBP of .372, as opposed to the risible numbers of both Logan and Patterson.

Having said that, I'd rather have Mike Cameron as a bargain CF.

With absolutely no time to check stats, I have the gut feeling that Patterson hits more HR's, with a lot more power potential. Hard to have less power potential than Logan.

I do prefer Lofton. Plus we can then trade Lofton at the deadline :)

Here are some stats:

2007

Lofton - 299/372/438 7 homers  VORP 24.2 (12th)
Patterson - 258/298/414  8 homers  VORP 8.4 (28th)
Logan - 265/304/345 0 homers  VORP 1.1 (45th)

By the way, these numbers are very consistent with each guy's career numbers.  What does this tell you?  Lofton has a superior on-base %, with a little bit of pop in the bat.  Patterson and Logan should not be playing regularly on anyone's team.  Their OBP's are horrible.  The VORP rankings (among all center fielders) pretty much tell you what each guy is worth right now.

I will take a 40 year old, 24 win player who is very tradable at the deadline and might not cost a pick over a guy will cost a 2nd round pick and ate pizza and doughnuts in his contract year. Lofton gets fired up, too. Kasten, are you listening?

BTW, both of those guys hit infinitely more HR/plate appearance than Logan. That's a fact.

I'll take Maxwell and a pitcher...I'm beginning to think we're fine if we give Maxwell and Pena a whole season....AND ....if NJ is back to his old playing self...even better.. Dmitri off the bench seems so very nice :)

This FA market doesn't seem to be the right crop to pick from.

I think Hunter will end up on the Braves. Just makes sense.

I don't think Maxwell's ready yet, but am perfectly contented to put Church in center when playing right handed starters, ie 75% of the time.

From one overpriced center fielder to another... :D

I don't see it happening, I think it's pretty obvious that the FO plans to work on Maxwell as our future CFer.  If we sign anyone, it won't be for more than a year, two tops.

I don't think Maxwell is Major League ready yet, nor will be be come spring training. He's at least a year away and maybe not then.

Corey Patterson = Kenny Lofton = Nook Logan

Wow you have a weird perspective on who has value and who doesn't when it comes to center fielders. Nook Logan has no business in the same sentence as Kenny Lofton, who, despite his age is miles ahead of Logan value wise.

I'm not excited at all about Pena.  I think he's (get ready...)  OVERRATED!  Seriously, though I really do.  He's not that great on defense and his bat wasn't all that exciting.

He put up very nice numbers in his short stint with the Nats. (.293/.352/.504) Only Dmitri had a higher OPS among the hitters on the team. In terms of being overrated, it is hard to imagine a guy who was traded straight up for Emiliano Fruto being "overrated." One thing is undeniable, and that is that Pena has real power - the kind that will be less and less common in aftermath of the steroid boom. But you are correct in being skeptical, because Pena is unproven. However, he is young, and most younger players need to get regular playing time to develop and achieve that potential.
