Nats acquire Diamondbacks pitcher off waivers (ie slag heap)

Per Svrluga:

Nats pick up RHP E. Gonzalez from Arizona
So the Nationals made a move today in claming right-hander Enrique Gonzalez off "trade waivers" from the Arizona Diamondbacks. He is placed on the 40-man roster (as is required with such a move) but with just a week left in the season won't report.

This is clearly a move with Mike Rizzo's fingerprints on it. The guy is 25, and he went 8-10 with a 5.14 ERA in 27 starts for Class AAA Tucson. The Nationals point out that he went 4-3 with a 4.41 ERA in July and August. He has made two stints with the D'Backs, going 3-7 with a 5.82 ERA in 23 major league appearances.

I'll talk to Rizzo about him, but for now I'll offer you the canned quote from him in the Nationals' release:

"Enrique has a quality arm and a four-pitch mix," said Rizzo, the club's VP of baseball operations. "He has been effective throughout his career in both a relief and starter role, but we believe he has the stuff and repertoire to pitch in a starting role for us."

So, there you have it: Another candidate for the rotation next year. The Diamondbacks' 2004 Minor League Pitcher of the Year, Gonzalez went 13-6 with a 3.22 ERA in 42 games (17 starts) for Lancaster of the Single-A California League to earn that citation. Pitching in the offensively-charged California League that year, Gonzalez tied for the league lead in wins, and ranked second in ERA. (This latter stuff straight from the release.)

I'll get you mroe when I get to the ballpark. For now, I leave you with the lineup. A few interesting things: D. Young must not be recovered enough to play; WMP gets a shot at cleanup; and Jimenez gets rewarded with his third straight start.

Could be next year's Redding (from me, that's a complement) - seems like he's fairly healthy - well done, FO.

Found this in a post on Svrluga's blog:

Scouting report on Enrique (sportsnet.ca):

Assets: Heat can peak in the upper 90s. Throws that and his breaking stuff with good command and has good stamina.

Flaws: Still needs to shake off the big-league jitters. Could stand to improve his approach with runners aboard.

Career potential: Decent back-end starter.

Link to an article about him (from Spring Training 2007):

Here's the article:

Gonzalez returns to once-promising form
Jack Magruder, Tribune

TUCSON - As Enrique Gonzalez shut down the Bay Area — San Francisco, then Oakland — in his first two spring starts, he took the Diamondbacks to a place they remember fondly.

“He looked exactly the way we saw him when he came up last year,” manager Bob Melvin said.

That is a good thing – Gonzalez was strong after his May 2006 recall.

Gonzalez threw four shutout innings Friday, and despite a rocky relief outing after his first start, has shown the capability of fitting snugly into a D-Backs’ rotation in need of two starters.

“He kept the ball down, threw quality strikes and made them hit it,” pitching coach Bryan Price said after Gonzalez’s last outing.

“He was very good.”

Just like he was in his early days with the D-Backs last season.

Gonzalez, 24, had six quality starts among his first nine after being recalled from Triple-A Tucson, adding stability to the rotation after Orlando Hernandez was traded and Russ Ortiz was disabled, then released.

Gonzalez’s early work made him appear to be a long-term solution to the D-Backs’ starting corps, adding weight to a resume that included his selection as the D-Backs’ minor league pitcher of the year in 2004.

He three-hit Cincinnati in his first start May 28 and four-hit Atlanta in his next appearance, pitching six innings in each game.

Gonzalez threw seven shutout innings against San Francisco on June 13 and gave up one run in seven innings against Seattle on June 29, after which he was 2-1 (two blown saves from being 4-1) with a 4.03 ERA.

But he scuffled in the second half, perhaps because of a combination of getting away from his normal pitching pattern and the weight of his longest professional season.

“He got into a little bit of a funk,” Melvin said. “I think he limited himself at times by going away too much. I think he pitched a little bit like a reliever, everything was fastball-slider.

“He was not afraid to shake off (a catcher’s signs) early and had a good idea of what worked for him. Then, maybe to an extent he doubted himself a little bit.”
Gonzalez is perhaps the most athletic starter on the staff, a good hitter who can field his position and keep the running game in check.

He is fresh and eager this spring after limiting his winter workload to prepare for 2007.

“I was tired” by the end of last season, Gonzalez said. “My arm feels strong now because I rested in the offseason.”

A native of Venezuela and a previous staple of the winter league there, Gonzalez pitched only 20 innings for La Guaira last winter after totaling 166 2/3 innings with the D-Backs and Triple-A Tucson in 2006.

Gonzalez pitched about 230 innings in 2005, when he was 11-8 with a 3.46 ERA in 161 1/3 innings at Double-A Tennessee before pitching a full winter season with La Guaira.

“This winter I got more rest,” he said.

“I’m going to work hard because I want to pitch in the big leagues again. Starting or relieving, it doesn’t matter.”

Nothing wrong with picking up free pitching.

What if it's Tony Armas, Ramon Ortiz, or a combination of the 2?

This can't hurt and in the long run may yield fruit.

That's not pitching, that's gasoline.

Ha.  Most reliable on a staff with a 5+ ERA.  But I will grant that he gave us the single most memorable pitching performance of 2006 late in the season vs. the eventual world champion Cards, taking that no hitter into the 9th, and after hitting a home run!  That was a fun day at the park.

Right, Ortiz was a terrible pitcher, as was Astacio, Hernandez, Patterson, et al.  One of the reasons 2007 was an improvement was that we got rid of all the negative performers from 2006.

That's so true but in a way also funny.
