What happens if someone doesn't pass through waivers?

Can't say I was a big King fan and I'm all torn up about it but I wish him luck and look forward to seeing what we might get.

You can either attempt to trade him to the team that claimed him, let that team have him outright or pull him back into your own fold.

Is it coincidence that the Nats FO unloaded some payroll just in time for September call ups?

Save a few $, for sure.  But just as importantly, now some innings are freed up for the new guys, as well as Bacsik (need to see more of his bullpen work) and Bowie (needs to rehab a bit).

I am assuming he thinks the Jimenez/Chico thing is funny, and maybe the Robledo...either way I'll take it!

Yeah - I was appreciating the jokes.

I think the "financial reasons" were just an excuse not to call up Traber, who probably won't be around next year, in my opinion.

I am perfectly happy to have King be the new Stanton.

The money they saved on King probably covers the money they have to pay the call ups.

According to Svrluga:

Quote
Spoke with Ray King by phone. He seemed a little disappointed for a guy headed to a pennant race. "Any time you get a phone call from the general manager's secretary, it's not good." He got the call right when he got to the ballpark today. And because he was traded after Aug. 31, he will not be eligible to be on the Brewers' postseason roster, should they make it.

He also spoke fondly of his time here: "Would I love to come back and put the Nat uniform on next year?" he said. "Like I told Bowden, 'Hey, I'm a free agent. ... I'd love to come back here. It's a great situation."

King's a good guy. Going to the Brewers and being part of a pennant race is a good situation for him. He's a pro, and he has been through this late season trade stuff before. It's the life of the situational lefty. I'm not expecting too much in return, but this is a no-brainer move. Anything we get is worth getting. We don't need King right now, the Brewers can use him at this point, King can be part of a pennant race and potentially get a ring because of it, he's a free agent at the end of the year and will be available to us again if we want him. It's a win win win all the way around for everyone involved.

Again, kudos to both teams for doing what baseball teams are supposed to do with these types of players.

That quote says he can't play if they make it to the playoffs, though. Doesn't really make sense to make the move, IMO. They just wanted him to help them actually make the playoffs? Was their need for a lefty specialist that bad?

Apparently YES. The Red Sox tried this with Stanton a couple years ago but it didn't work out for them.

Again, if someone on the Brewers gets injured, they can add him to the playoff roster. He's still good insurance.

It is too bad the Brewers traded for him I was hoping they would be able to win that division. I don't know why anyone would trade for Ray King.

They could really use a starter, but none available.  King can be of some small assistance, perhaps, but the major benefit may have been to signal the team that "we're still in this thing".

It worked for them...they made the playoffs.

I also liked King, and thought he was a success for what he was supposed to do. Besides, how many athletes (outside of sumo wrestlers) have bellies like King, D-Man (and me)?

here is the PTBNL, courtest of Nats Farm Authority:

Quote
The Washington Nationals today acquired 23 year-old outfielder/first baseman Andrew Lefave from the Milwaukee Brewers to complete the September 4 trade in which Milwaukee acquired left-handed pitcher Ray King in exchange for a player to be named later. Nationals Vice President and General Manager Jim Bowden made the announcement.

The Single-A South Atlantic League batting champion, Lefave hit .345 (146-for-423) with 25 doubles, 17 home run, 79 RBI and 59 walks in 112 games for the West Virginia Power this season. Lefave’s batting average ranked second in minor league baseball among players with at least 350 at-bats. He also led all Single-A batters with at least 350 at-bats in batting and on-base percentage (.432). Lefave, who bats and throws left handed, led the entire Brewers organization in hitting in 2007.

In one-plus seasons, or 147 professional games, Lefave is a .347 career hitter with 18 home runs and 101 RBI. He also sports stellar career on-base (.431) and slugging (.517) percentages. Lefave originally signed with the Brewers as a non-drafted free agent on July 1, 2006 after attending Missouri Valley College.

Looks like a lot of teams missed out on a nice hitter. Very glad we picked him up - he's just what we need - a slugging LF/1B type. Even if he's big on strikeouts, then we may have gotten a very cheap Adam Dunn, but that BA doesn't leave room for many.

Seems like we did a nice trade, a win-win for everyone. Our farm system is really looking up.

A 23 year old who tore up low class A. A little younger than Maxwell.  If we are going to consider Maxwell a good prospect, why not this guy?

King for a Maxwell caliber player sounds good to me.

Less HR that Maxwell but almost similar OPS in South Atlantice League (.957 to .968).  Lefave was more skewed towards the OBP. So he is less of a power guy.  I dont know what is valued higher in the OPS scheme of things. Seems like it would be equal. Maybe there is a better correlation of power guys in Class A making it than OBP guys or vice versa.

This guy just played 4 years of college ball and got his degree (I assume). I'm NOT going to give him any flack for that. Next year Double A, majors at 25 - that sounds good to me if he can stay on track.

We traded a month of King for this guy, got to give Munoz a tryout, and we can always sign King back next year. Bowden is awesome.

Certainly seems like a good deal from our perspective, but as always we'll have to see how this guy develops.
