King traded to Brewers for Andrew Lefave

for a PTBNL ..... not sure what good this does for the brewers though .... its too late to add him to the playoff roster (if they make it) and he's a FA at the end of the season ... whatever Bowden gets for him is a good deal.

for PTBNL

Makes sense, as Munoz was brought up to be a lefty specialist. King could even be re-signed next year. Wonder if the Brewers have a corresponding injury to get King on the playoff roster, otherwise it's a silly trade.

I also wonder why he passed through waivers.

If there's an injury on the Brewers, King can be moved to the playoff roster

It is too bad the Brewers traded for him I was hoping they would be able to win that division. I don't know why anyone would trade for Ray King.

Why would we resign Ray King? We might as well bring back Mike Stanton and Joey Eischien. While we're at it we can trade Cordero for Dan Kolb and Jon Rauch for Danys Baez, and then somehow aquire Kyle Farnsworth.

Got two pitchers for 2 days of Stanton in 2005, and Shairon Martis for 1.5 months of Stanton in 2006. NEVER underestimate Bowden.

Yeah, I don't know how the hell we pulled off that deal with the Sox...

I'm assuming food for Ray King was included in the deal, so I'm assuming we'll get Ben Sheets at least, since the cost of Ray King's food for a month is probably in the millions.

Interesting that you say Rickie Weeks. I just thought the same thing. The Brewers clearly don't like Weeks, but I don't know why they would trade him for an old, average, middle reliever. Ya never know though!!

Good deal for us.

King wasnt in the future.
Now some of the young guys we brought up get more chances out of the pen. And we get some young player as a bonus in the deal.

That makes no sense to me.  Did the Brewers contact us for King or did they just deal him for the heck of it?  And like Erica, I'm bummed about it too.  I like the guy!

No sense having him take up space. They want to give Munoz a shot, and King could walk at the end of the season for no compensation. Any minor leaguer under team control is a win in this deal.

We're just loaded with lefties at the moment.  Bacsik and Bowie are fully capable of doing even more than King, given they are both effective against hitters on both sides of the plate.  If we got a prospect with almost any shot of making it up the ladder, we've done fine.

Does this mean that Ken Rosenthal, Keith Law, Larry Dobrow et al will start singing our praising, for making a trade???

They're trying to shore up their bullpen before the ship sinks. They're on the brink of going under .500 after having had such a hot start and lead in the division.

Losing King is no big deal at all. Personally I can't stand the idea of 'lefty' specialists that can't pitch to right haded batters and are not even that good at getting lefties out. He may be a nice guy or whatever but he is best suited to run his boutique in Arizona.

Losing him isn't a big deal, agreed.  We have two fully capable guys ready to go.  However, I don't agree that he wasn't that good at getting lefties out.   He started the season awfully but stabilized and has actually been pretty good for us.  We save a few $ on salary for the rest of the year, and hopefully pick up a decent prospect.

Here are some comments by Svrluga that put good perspective on King's performance this year:
-----------------------------------
The portly lefty had pitched pretty well for what his job description was - getting out one or two left-handed hitters and then hitting the showers. "Get in and get out before they figure you out," King told me several times. Throw out his stats - 1-1 with a 4.54 ERA - and looked at his season a couple different ways.

First, look at how he has done against left-handed hitters: a .160 average with .270 on-base percentage and miniscule .290 slugging percentage. That's his job. "I judge my year by how I do against lefties," he said.

But also look at how he did after an April stint on the disabled list. Overall in that time, he had a 3.60 ERA and .227 opponents' average - including right-handed hitters. He held lefties to .140/.239/.281 in that time. So whatever you think of him, he did his job.

The other criteria King used to judge his season: The percentage of inherited runners he allowed to score. King allowed 9 of his 38 inherited runners to score, a percentage of 23.7. That ranks 12th in the National League and tops among the Nationals.

I am assuming he thinks the Jimenez/Chico thing is funny, and maybe the Robledo...either way I'll take it!

Bowden just said that since King is 33, will be a FA at season's end and is not a type A or B FA we would get no compensation for him. Bowden did say though that as a FA, King would be welcome to return to Washington next season.

Good move. This is why we have a guy like him. Kudos for the Brewers for actually having a GM with a brain. I don't know what the other contenders are thinking. The Brewers have a decent farm system. It will be interesting to see what we get.

In terms of why he passed through waivers, you can't read anything into that. There's all kinds of back room stuff involved in that, and most teams at this point are passing guys through waivers. King is a valuable commodity.
