WASHINGTON -- The Nationals traded right-hander Emiliano Fruto to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday for prospect Chris Carter, who then was shipped to the Boston Red Sox to complete last week's deal that sent outfielder Wily Mo Pena to Washington.

Fruto was 3-9 with a 5.26 ERA in 18 appearances, including 16 starts, for Triple-A Columbus in 2007. Washington acquired him last offseason when it traded second baseman Jose Vidro to Seattle.

Carter is a lefty-hitting first baseman who was batting .324 with 18 homers and 84 RBIs at Triple-A Tucson. He becomes the player to be named from Friday's trade in which Washington got Pena and cash from Boston.

In three games with the Nationals, Pena is 5-for-11 (.455) with a double, two homers and three RBIs.

He was a throw in player in the Vidro trade.  He has serious control issues and when he can throw strikes he gets pelted. 

Fruto's numbers in AAA this season: (3-9, 5.26 ERA) 87.1 IP 78 H 52 R 51 ER 6 HR 68 SO 59 BB

He's still young at 23 and can get better but he is not nearly the prospect like others in the system such as Balester and Detwiler.

We got the better of the deal. Fruto was supposed to dominate and, obviously, he didn't. Pena's the same age as Carter with far more MLB experience. Bowden done good.

The question is, why in the world would the D-Backs do this? The Nats did ok in the trade, the Red Sox did great, but the D-Backs got a paper bag filled with era and mediocrity.

Fruto's still young, but his description reminds me of...like, Jorge Julio.  A hard-thrower who burns out easily and can't control his stuff.  If that's really the kind of player he is, then I'm not too sad to lose him to bring WMP into the fold.

I tried to help you out with the whole lost and lsot thing. But using loss in that sentence I can't help you with.

Some here did believe that Fruto was a future starter here, but the fact is, this organization has stockpiled some serious arms and Fruto was not going to be in any equation.  Not to mention 3-9 with an ERA over 5.00 are not stats that get you there.  This was an excellent player to throw in this trade.
