This shocked me when I got the push notification

Wood has to be DH. Lile and RHIII should be hitting everyday, not Bell

^^I agree, they should DFA Bell asap.

Otherwise, welcome Mr Lile!

If Lowe is gone at the deadline, Lile can play LF and Wood can play 1B.

Lile used to play against my little brother as rival high schools.

I’ve been thinking Wood could ultimately move to 1B.  It certainly fits his frame.  I do wonder if there is enough power in an OF of Crews, Young, Hassell, Lile in the future.  Crews has pop, but Hassell and Lile are as has been noted hit-tool over power guys, and Young is simply a defensive specialist that should be a 4th OF.

What is needed to be acquired is a RH power bat.  There’s flexibility where they can play.  1B, DH, LF…they can absolutely be a bat-first guy.  Hopefully both Hassell and Lile emerge and you can trade one for perhaps a controllable bullpen piece.

I’d much rather Wood at 1B than DH. Keeps roster flexible if he can play a position.

Wood is way too young and athletic to be a full-time DH.  That’s a waste.  DH should be for big bats that are too old/unathletic to play the field.  Those guys are cheaper for obvious reasons.

I agree. His future value plummets if he is stuck at DH.

I also am hopeful he is young enough he can develop into a passable LF.

Besides, when we sign Schwarber next year, Schwarber's going to need to DH.

This surprised me, but there had to be something more than an ow-ey for Young to miss this much time. I'm glad it was diagnosed though annoyed it took almost a week. There was room on the 40 man roster for adding someone, so if young needed to be IL'd, this move makes sense as Lile was the next outfielder.

As for playing time, it might be that Lowe starts sitting against lefties and Bell plays some 1st base. Lowe has been cold this month and Bell is starting to heat up. Call also has come back to earth in May (.205 / .340 / .318) after benefiting from a .346 BABIP in Mar/April. I suspect its 4 guys into 3 slots for a while (Lile, Bell, Lowe, and Call). Lile and Call are a natural platoon, and I could see both starting some games when Lowe or Bell rests.

22, a 2021 2d round pick out of High School. If he sticks, then give the draft and development teams some respect.

Who do we think Daylen Lile is? A possible starter? Or Alex Call, an ideal #4 OF?

I think his ceiling is as a CF who hits for average and has speed. A better Jacob Young?

repeat that catch about 15 times and we'll start comparing his D to Young's.

Recall the incident in Fort Myers Spring 2024:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2024/03/02/daylen-lile-spring-training-injury-nats/

Janes's article.

They thought about not playing after the incident and the 15 minute delay for care.
Quote
In the immediate aftermath of the injury, Martinez and Washington’s director of athletic training, Paul Lessard, ran out to tend to Lile. When they got to him, Martinez said, Lile was lying still, but cameras captured him moving his right arm while lying on his side as Lessard and others tried to assess his injury. A delay of about 15 minutes ensued as trainers from both teams and paramedics tended to Lile, who was placed on a stretcher and carted out through the center field gate. Lile gave a thumbs-up as he left.

“When you see someone go over the wall like that and you don’t see them get up, then everyone in the bullpen started calling like that, you think, ‘Oh no,’ ” said Martinez, who expressed gratitude to Boston’s trainers and doctor. “You just hope he didn’t hit his head, his neck.”
...
When it became clear that Lile’s injury was serious and as his shaken teammates knelt in the outfield, umpires asked Martinez whether he wanted to end the game. He said he considered giving up on the last two innings but decided it would be better for everyone’s psyche to play on.
Kid plays hard. maybe a little reckless defensively. No fear even after what could have been a crippling flip over the wall.

Jacob Young would have caught it without needing to dive.

I wanna see how he does against RHP. Boy, it would be something if he and Hassell could post a 100+ wRC+ against RHP, we would have a legit outfield with Call and Young platooning

FWIW: in AAA this year he put up .331. / .388 / .496 vs RHP. in 144 PAs and .341 / .341 / .500 vs LHP in 44 PAs.

I like this guy. Probably needs to be back in Rochester when Jacob Young is healthy, but he looks the part of a ballplayer. At 22, I think there's value in him raking for a while longer in Rochester while we figure out what we have in Hassell and see if Jacob Young can get his offense back to a passable place.
