While there's a huge difference in ERA, it seems tied a lot to their ability to strand runners. Williams is only 63.1%, S-S is 84.8%. It helps that AJ S-S Ks a lot of guys (24.8%). Williams actually has the better K/BB ration (S-S 2.35, Williams 3.17), and a similar K-BB% (Williams 12.6% vs. S-S 14.3%), it's just he has to rely more on contact for his outs. S-S WHIP is respectable (1.24) while Williams is rough (1.53). BABIP has a big role - .280 vs .356. Home run rates are comparable, so it really comes down to more contact and more contact dropping. Neutralize the BABIP, and it explains why the FIPs are close.
