Ownership and management/front office really seem at odds to me. Given Rizzo's budget it's clear ownership wishes to punt this season, but it seems Rizzo and Davey are actually trying to win which is why they're making moves like moving Lord back to the pen and keeping Sims instead of Brzykcy.

If we're punting the season then there's no reason to hurt the development of guys who potentially have a future on the team in favor of those who do not. I'm wondering if Rizzo and Davey are feeling pressure to finally start winning again to save their jobs.

Like any other baseball guys they want to win and Rizzo knows they are locked out of the lottery anyway.  He's hoping that the team is in contention and he can sell the owners on some moves at the deadline.  Could generate more attendance down the stretch and even playoff revenue.  I don;t know what Martinez is aware of other than he's making more money than he probably ever dreamed.

It could come to that, but there's obvious play-the-contract issues keeping Sims and Lopez around.  Rizzo could not have spent the money he was given any worse.  It's been too many seasons now of using deadline trades to try to make up for poor drafting and development, and none have produced anything meaningful outside the Soto trade.  Last year, we had way too many ABs given to Senzel, Gallo (when healthy), and Eddie Rosario, this year it's been Josh Bell and horrendous bullpen signings.  Mini Me is not some smart businessman who got where he did by creativity or skill, so he's unlikely to demand a change in strategy, but maybe Rizzo's horrible use of Lerner dollars this year will be what finally gets him out of here.

Zuckerman:

Lucas Sims was unconditionally released after tonight’s game. Corresponding move to come tomorrow.

First 1.4 million DFA’d for Poche, then 3 million for Sims, $6 million for Bell might be the end of Rizzo, which wouldn’t be a bad thing

Great at trades, not so great at signing FAs as of late.

I don't like to :woop: when something negative happens to a player, but I never liked this signing and did not think his track record deserved anything more than a minor league contract with an NRI. He didn't earn his roster spot.

I think with the DFA, there's a chance it's Pilkington and not Brzykcy.

the theory that they would not cut guys because of their contracts has taken hit in the bullpen.

He's been miserable with the $ he has been given.  He repeats the same mistakes, waste money on rentals in the hope of a deadline flip to make up for bad drafting and development.  It hasn't worked but he still tried it again this year.  There's no creativity, no strategy to manage the low budget, other than than to lie and BS fans and the press.  Tampa, Cleveland and the A's do a lot better with consistently low budgets, all three have lower active payroll than the Nats do right now.

Poche and Sims had to be impossibly bad to get cut.  Bell is currently a major play-the-contract beneficiary, as Gallo was last year.

Yep. Rizzo don't give a crap anymore. He tried to spend and ownership shut him down. Now he's going to waste their money.

I assume Bell has until mid-to-late May to turn it around

Gallo had that 2 well-timed injuries. He played only 76 games and had 260 PAs. he was out 6/12 - 8/20, and before that, from 4/27 - 5/17. More or less, he had a month to get going, then a break, and another month to get going. I don't think it was the money that was keeping him from being cut.

I think they let Bell get 200 - 250 PAs before they pull the plug. He's at 128 now. End of May, maybe mid-June.

If House were up, I'd probably be good with Tena and Rosario or Call splitting DH.
