Sunshine Squad: 2025
« on: January 31, 2025, 09:24:29 pm »
Watching MASN classics tonight showing a game from last year in which our lineup featured a stretch of Gallo, Meneses, Rosario, Adams, and Senzel.

It has to be better this year!!

At this point, I doubt the Opening Day lineup or any of the first five starting pitchers will make me mad.

From a viewing perspective, rather huge improvement over past few seasons.

4. Meneses - DH
5. Gallo - 1B
6. Ruiz - C
7. Rosario - CF
8. Vargas - 3B (sub for Senzel)
9. Garcia Jr. - 2B

2025 likely OD lineup:

3. Wood - LF
4. Bell - DH
5. Lowe - 1B
6. Garcia Jr. - 2B

DeJong signing threatens this, but possibility of an average Nats defense thawed my heart.

This should be an enjoyable, interesting team to watch.

Nats rank 18th in the Athletic's "Hope-o-Meter"

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6186874/2025/03/11/mlb-fans-optimism-results-rankings/

Quote
18. Washington Nationals: 62.7 percent optimism

2024: 50.6 percent (18)
2023: 12 percent (27)
2022: 5.6 percent (28)

Pessimist Tom: Juan Soto will wear a Mets cap on his Hall of Fame plaque, and I’m still not over it.

Optimist Peter: The hyped young prospects I’ve been excited about since they were drafted (James Wood, Dylan Crews, Robert Hassell III, Brady House) are on the starting roster or will be soon. Our core is coming to fruition. Still anxious about ownership’s willingness to spend when needed.

Optimist Michael: We’re going to be bad. Not Marlins bad, but bad. This year is the tipping point. Optimism stems from hope for the young kids to show they can be part of the next core. If there are more misses than hits, it will be tough to be optimistic for the next few years.

Pessimist Juniper: The 2010s rebuild was so vigorous. It really felt like the team was building towards greatness. I don’t feel that now. The World Series was six years ago but there’s still no sense of urgency.

6 runs and 5 runs from the offense on Saturday and Sunday.

Starters pitched 17.1 innings, 2 Runs, 2 Earned, 15 hits, 2 walks, 20 Ks, with 1 HR. All of those starters are under team control through 2027.

Even backing out Gore's start, the two guys who are called at best back end starters by many writers went 11.1 innings, 2 runs, 2 earned, 14 hits, 2 walks, 7 Ks, with 1 HR, and they are under team control until 2030.

Jake Irvin is under team control through 2028, and is arb eligible next year.

Sunshine: yes, three really good starts

We're tied for 3rd place with the Mets after the opening series and ahead of the Braves.

Way too small a sample size for real analysis

But

Keibert Ruiz showing a bit of power is very reassuring. Seeing a solid defensive third baseman not named Vargas is nice. New unis look good.

FG has him as 1.152 days service time, so while he'll be a super 2 next year, he won't have 6 years service time until after 2029, if I'm doing my math right. Arb in 2026, 2027, 2028, and 2029. Parker got a full year last year, so he is pre-arb this year and next, then 3 years of arb. I think they are both FAs the same year.

BTW - look for them to find some excuse to send Parker down for 3 weeks.

You are correct, he's practically a lock for Super 2 next year, then has three more years of team control, so he hits FA one year before Crews & Wood.

Two out of three against one of the better teams in MLB. And Crews goes 2-4.  All is well.  Bring on the Evil Empire and their bandwagon fans.
