The Washington Nationals agreed to terms with left-handed pitcher Shinnosuke Ogasawara on a two-year contract and designated left-handed pitcher Joe La Sorsa for assignment on Friday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Ogasawara, 27, joins the Nationals after he pitched to a 3.12 ERA in 24 games in 2024 for the Chunichi Dragons of the the Nippon Professional Baseball Organization. He walked just 22 batters and allowed just nine home runs in 144.1 innings of work.

With just a two year deal I imagine they want him in the majors ASAP.

Scouting report:

Swingman/long reliever who could be a back of the rotation starter.

NPB is pretty much Triple A level baseball. Maybe some Double A mixed in. No reason to put him in the minors

This part gives me hope:

He’s been working out at Driveline, by the way, so I expect teams have gotten plenty of eyes on Ogasawara

He needs to add a bit of velo l. At 27, that is still possible and Driveline is the place to do it.

Also, him at DriveLine:

sounds like a lefty low velocity guy who lives or dies on command.

What's interesting from the scouting report Imref linked to is that they say his movement on his fastball is like Imanaga but he's a couple ticks slower. Maybe the work at driveline adds a little velocity.

I hope so bc Imanaga a has minimal movement. He gets by on IVB. Same as Parker.

The AP reports that LHP Shinnosuke Ogasawara signed with the #Nats for a $3.5 million contract plus a posting fee of $700,000. The total paid-out will be $4.2 million, and only the $3.5 million will be part of the CBT payroll at $1.75 million a year. That brings the #Nats 2025 CBT payroll up to $125.5MM.

I forget, do we still control him after the two years in arb or not because he’s an international pro?

Surprised he got DFA'd. I think he remains one of the top candidates to take one of the final bullpen spots if he comes back. Hopefully Mason Thompson has a comeback year too.

there's not a lot of dead weight on the 40 man now.

I'm not. He's a reliever version of Tommy Milone.

I think this signing says Cavalli is toast.

Cavalli may be toast, but I don't see the signing as much impact on him. Righty rotation piece v lefty long man / spot starter. I think he's a bullpen piece, maybe middle relief

My guess is the plan is to start Cavalli at Rochester and see what happens. At best, 2025 is a year where he'll throw 100-150 innings and position himself for a rotation spot in 2026.

If they are thinking about Ogasawara as a starter then things get a bit interesting with Gore, Irvin, Parker, Williams, Soroka, Herz, and Ogasawara battling for 5 slots. Gore and Irvin are locks, probably Williams too. Herz should be a lock given how he pitched in the 2nd half last year.

Maybe Rizzo has a trade in mind for a 3B?

No one the Nats have signed this offseason precludes anyone else from getting a job. Soroka, Williams, and Ogasawara are all likely to spend significant time on the IL. Cavalli will get several opportunities to crack the MLB rotation

Zuckerman reports that Rizzo told reporters that Ogasawara will be a starter.

Gotta be some trades coming...

I do wonder if Parker or Herz will start the year in the bullpen. It's a nice way to strengthen the bullpen and I don't think it preclude a move back to starting.

He's treated like a free agent signing because he's over 25 and played in a recognized int'l league.  Int'l players under 25, like Roki Sasaki, go into the international bonus pool, and need to wait the standard three years before becoming arb eligible.
