Progress!

Back over 9 walks and hit batters per 9 IP.

Pulled after 26 pitches last night and just 12 strikes.  0 K's 2 BB's in 2/3rds of an inning.

Less high on him than Sykora of course but still an interesting prospect. You do have to wonder about him when Cleveland was willing to include him along with Rodriguez and Tena for just Thomas. Cleveland is great at developing pitching, and that was super-fast to give him up. Rhode Island kid, so maybe harder to evaluate before the draft. Still room to develop, but more a lottery ticket now.

Maybe the previous start was a walk up call for him.

0 ERs today and 9 Ks in 5 IP.  But also back to his old self with 5 BBs and a very inefficient 93 pitches in spite of only giving up a few hits.

Take it slow with him. All of this year at high a, all of next year at aa. If he doesn’t figure out how to walk less than 6 per 9 by then he’ll still only be 21 to start 2027

19 at A+ is good. Had a very nice month. Can afford to be patient with him. Doesn't have to be added to the 40 man roster until after 2027. If he finishes 2026 at AA he's still on track. More or less, 2 years to make as much progress on throwing strikes as he can. The K% is a good sign he's hard to make contact against. .193 AVG against with a .306 BABIP, so it's not luck. Considering we got Tena and Clemmey for Thomas, that's a fine deal. Low end, he's a late inning relief option.

19 would be young for Fredericksburg. I'm more encouraged today about him than the day the Nats acquired him.

Another inefficient outing with 4 walks.  Send him back to Cleveland.

Overall line was pretty good: 5⅔ IP, 3H, 2R, 1ER, 4BB, 5K

That is not good.  He's walking nearly one batter per inning in High A.

K's don't matter when he's throwing 20 pitches an inning and walking that many.  He's a hard thrower right now, not a pitcher like Sykora.  19 means he's got time to fix it, but he's not showing signs of improvement.

He's 4 years younger than the average High A pitcher and is holding his own. I'm happy with how it's going for him.

Dude is striking out 12+ per 9IP. At worst, he's a reliever. That's more than fine for a guy who can't hit his weight.

The average High A pitcher doesn't make it anywhere near MLB.  It's not like he's walking 4.5 per 9 IP.  He's walking just about one batter per inning and often throwing 25 pitches per inning.  He's about to turn 20 - Travis Sykora wasn't doing this in his age 20 season.   Even Jarlin Susana was walking 3-4 batters per 9 IP at High A and then his walk rate soared in AA.   At these very high levels the walk rate and inefficiency aren't going to disappear with another birthday.

A big defense of Clemmey's potential in my mind is he's a New England kid. Not so much a regional pride thing as he's a guy who hasn't had the innings that southerners and west coast kids had before being drafted. I think there's room to refine his control. I don't know if the wildness is why he gets ks (that is, is his deception helped by wildness), but if he can get the bb rate down into the 3s/9 and keep the ks, that's awesome. That said, Cleveland being willing to part with him so soon after drafting is an orange flag (between yellow and red).

While his very high walk rate says a lot in itself, would be helpful to see his Statcast numbers.  It's available now in all AAA parks, but will provide a lot more detail when they get into the low minors.  Right now, it's in just 10 A parks and no Nats affiliates below AAA.

They had him take two weeks off, and he's come back last two starts throwing strikes.  K rate is down but staying in the zone a lot more.  Not one to get too excited about this org's coaching, but good to see.

No walks last night but a lot of hits: 5.1 IP | 9 H | 5 R/ER | 0 BB | 5 K, came out after a rain delay.
