USA and China tie for most gold medals with 40. We beat China by 1 in the gold medal count last time.
I think any Olympics where we are not #1 in golds is a disappointment for America but it didn't feel like a disappointment when I was watching it on TV. There were plenty of triumphs by the American athletes who were expected to triumph and plenty of feel-good stories about sports where the USA hasn't medaled in forever and this year some charismatic American won the silver or bronze - like the horse pommel guy or women's rugby. But did this mask that in quite a few cases, American athletes who were favored failed to win the gold.
I will do what I can to be there in person in 2028 in Los Angeles. Hopefully a lot of our silver/bronze medalists from Paris will be there and even better, ready to take gold.
